The world has gone bandy.

I use technology like a muslim terrorist uses a British Passport.

What's the point in it all? I mean, really? It's all bollocks, isn't it. Has it really improved the human life experience or have we been sucked in by a 'Emperors New Clothes' scam of world dominating power.

Well I for one would ban mobile phones.

Fucking things.

Anybody who needs to contact me THAT urgently when I'm not at home, knows where I am.

They even have the audacity to whinge at you. "I've been calling your mobile all weekend!".

"Well that wont have worked, it was switched off and left at home."

"Why did you do that?"

"I didn't want to have to answer it."

"Oh."

All hope is not yet lost though, we can still switch things off at the wall. The day we can no longer do that is the day I go and live in a log cabin.

I should add that I take great delight in using my Zone Alarm firewall and have set many of the functions to 'ask permission'. I like to deny normal running processes access to the internet from time to time, just because I can.

They ask. Usually I say yes, sometimes I say no.

And if you want to get really pedantic, What about man's greatest INVENTION???

The Wheel. Rolling Eyes

I guess that would put paid to a few enjoyable past-times.

Stinkwheel for president! You can never get away from things with one of those in your pocket, everybody wants everything done immediately and direct their imapatience into your earhole.

I am just glad for where I work, we don't answer the phone until they A) start making a message B) are someone we want to talk to.

Take it further and say you can't use fire, either. I know it was a discovery rather than an invention, but harnessing it's energy is still "technology", as defined as "applying a systematic technique, method or approach to solve a problem".

Let's only eat raw stuff and freeze in winter.

Just to bring sunshine to you, ryanair (i think its them) are introducing a system on all there planes so you can infact use your phone EVEN on planes. There will be no sanctuary.

maybe just ban ringtones on mobiles? vibrate works fine enough for me and doesnt annoy anyone.

i dont think they should be banned though, I find them useful for just keeping in contact with friends over long distances without much effort, its just handy having a connection to the world in my pocket.

also if I was ever near someone who needed an ambulance, and I had my mobile, well nuff said Smile

Spookily came up in conversation last night.
Now when I'm on the bike I'm away from it all and can just relax and ride. I find it a useful way to relax and de-stress (is that a word?). So obviously can't answer the 'phone on the bike. Then the missus asks does the audio thingy (just love the technical terms Wink) mean I can plug a mobile into it 'just in case I need to talk to you or there's an emergency'. Luckily was able to answer no Very Happy. Then she asks if I could upgrade it cheaply. Again, was able to answer no Very Happy, have you seen the price of Autocom units Shocked

I'm greatly attached to my mobile phone, and have been for some years now - I love texting all my far-flung friends, especially because I work shifts and it's a good way of getting in touch without ringing someone at silly O'clock in the morning/evening because I've just finished work!

My only real nark with regards to mobiles is that people expect you to always pick them up - because it's a mobile, innit?! If I'm busy, or doing something relaxing, I'll ignore a call on my mobile and phone you back when I'm ready to.
Conversely, I hate talking to someone who will just whip out their phone when it rings, interrupt their conversation with you - a real person standing beside them, and rudely jump into a conversation with someone that couldn't be bothered to turn up!

In the same vein as the complaints that email is destroying the use of the English language, I think mobiles are eroding any last remaining bits of politeness and good manners in the nation.

Anyone read the book "Bear vs Shark" by CHris Bachelder?

Its along the lines where nothing can be switched off. Quite a good book. Thumbs Up

... sold us down the river ...

just need to compare using a small paper pocket diary with the mobile equivalent ...

add an address or an appointment, or change a phone number for a mate ...

on the diary, flick to the right page and write the stuff in. job done.

on your mobile thing, turn it on, wait for it to boot/ settle after the hello splash screen. pull up a menu system, cycle through to the calendar function. find it's in 'day' mode ... cycle it to month view and shift through to the date you want to add the appointment. hack your way through the unfriendly 'add appointment' or hotkey shortcut that gets you there, spend two minutes populating the necessary fields before it accepts it as a valid dated/ timed entry ... review your 'saved' entry ... and realise you've misspelt the main info, knowing that it'll render any search for that item useless, you grudgingly have to go back in and do it all again ... etc etc etc

nastiness

actually that might not be too bad as it would mean you only ate fresh food, and you would have to live in a warm country

although i guess moving to a warm country to do it would probably involve some technology

Because the mental image of a lad with his phone stuck up his arse for when someone rings is a lot less funny than of a girl with it stuck up...well, yeh.
