Losing interest in hobbies?

Basically I have been learning the violin for roughly 12 years, now approaching the grade seven exam. The problem is that I am beginning to lose interest, practise seems more like a chore rather than a normal activity or something I normally do in the evening.

I also used to compose the odd song, riff whatever on guitar and bass guitar but they too feel like a chore to play.

I am going to university in about 9days and would ideally like to carry music on there, however with the way I am feeling at the moment it is very doubtful.

It just seems an almighty waste to lose those 12years of teaching, but it doesnt give me a buzz anymore.

What should I do?

Get some new stuff to play. I got bored with the piano as i had nothing left to play and the excitment of accomplishing a new tune went away. Choose something difficult and do it. Hope it comes back.

Remember why you enjoy playing, find the fun in your music again, play something easy but fun (I do it with disney songs) and play them just for fun stop concentrating on exams it just makes things sticky they can be done at any time.

Another thing is that when you go to uni a lot of uni's have a band/orchestra, join that find people to "jam" with. Me and my friends quite often meet up for a play and mess about (I am a geek I know Embarassed

everythnig gets boring after a while, and you feel the urge to quit..

but you will more than likely go back to it

i used to play football and was pretty good at it.. at around 14 i quit and took up skateboarding, i quit at 16 and started to play football again.. now i quit football and i have the urge to go back into skatebording sometimes

just take a break, and once your not playing, you will want to play again..

I was in the same position just before summer, i was getting bored of drumming even though i was fairly succesful, gigging and jamming out with mates etc.

But i've been drumming for about 5 years and went without drumming for a good three months over summer, i got back to Dubai about two weeks ago and the first thing i did was have a bash and it felt phenonmal.

Just drop it for a while and when you go back to it, you'll remember what it's all about and why you enjoyed doing it so much Thumbs Up

12 years is long enough, you can play violin well enough to woo the ladies, or play at a wedding, or what ever....

I have more than one hobby.....

That way I can pick up/ put down whichever one I fancy doing at the time.

In summer it tends to be my bike and hassling traffic, but I also MTB.

In winter I paint my Warhammer 40k figures and attend battles, fix/tinker with the bike and spend more time on the P.C than I would normally.

At some point I would like to learn to play the electric guitar, but thats purely a dream at the moment, cos we have just bought a house.

Props to you for sticking at your violining for so long, but is there nothing else you have ever wanted to do?

Don't give up playing the violin, take grade 8 if you can, being able to offer Violin lessons to kiddies while you are at University will come in VERY handy at £15 ph Wink

Make sure when you get to uni, you go and sign up and join the University orchestra. The new repertoire should help fire your interest, as will the opportunity to meet new people and learn new techniques.

Playing in orchestras, quartets, chamber groups is the best reason to play an instrument - it's my favourite thing about playing instruments and what keeps me going after 16 years of learning, playing and teaching Smile

My biggest regret is giving up the violin when i was 17.

I still have that violin upstairs, and every now and then i think of taking it out.. however i'm so out of practic and never seem to have the hours to put in to get back to where i was.

I did take mind to uni with me to but never really played it there.

I would say keep on doing it. Find the music you are intrested in and just play that.

But thank you for mentioning it becasue i really really must get back in to playing mine!!!
Trouble is with a violin is played well its sounds amazing. played badly its really really does sound bad!!! and giving it up for a few years means you have to spend a lot of time catching up!!

I don't get it why the need to do exams ,

that said ability to play is useful keep some form of practice up , one day you maybe a busker.

You should:

Buy/download some SKYCLAD albums right away. Listen to The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth first, then Jonah's Ark, then Vintage Whine.

Then start playing your violin again, with renewed valour!

£20/h you say , thats funny I just finished about 5 accounts of people who teach last week, they don't make much , and if it took him 12 years to learn and you only get £20/h its not worth it,

My bosses took 10 years to qualify and make 500K which is about 250/h
