Which are the best crash protectors to get?

Are the R&G racing ones best to go for?

I've also seen ones on ebay go for half the price of the R&G's, but they're either unbranded or made by a company i havn't heard before.

There is also these : https://www.btinternet.com/~twowheelz/bikebootsale.htm
They're slightly cheaper that R&G's, but is it best to pay a bit extra?

hmm...

Yes they are, they are pretty cheap anyways.

I can only speak from personal experience *ahem*, well and that of mates, but R&G are definitely the way to go mate.

I low sided my SV a while back resulting in it sliding down the road for a good 12 meters before stopping on a grass verge. It had R&Gs fitted and they couldn't have done a better job. Not one painted surface touched the deck Thumbs Up

Any views on the ones in the link i posted?

I thought they sounded a good deal, but then tought they wont have gone through as much testing as the R&G's and may not be up to the job Thinking

Looks like i'll be getting R&G's then, cheers guys Thumbs Up

What makes R&G better though? From what i can see it's just a bit of nylon with a bolt though it.

I'm not saying that the ebay ones are any good but it's not hard to make some the same as the R&G ones for a fraction of the price. Like nearly everything in the biking world, they are a rip off.

Anybody got any views on the puig bracket type bobbins? They look sturdy Embarassed

I'm refusing to fit R+G's to my 636 as the fairing has to be cut/drilled to fit them, which defeats the object Neutral even though their unlikely to be removed again but you get the idea Laughing

It doesn't defeat the object. If you go down on your bike the engine casing will get smashed aswell along with the fairings. Isn't a 10mm hole better than the whole side of your bike smashed in ?

Materials.

There are different types of nylon used, some manufacturers also put inserts inside the bung. They also talk about the bolt and say its designed not to snap on impact, and other shite like that Mr. Green

Also, the way i see it, R&G have the funding to test these bungs and develop them, unlike some guy with a few bolts, some nylon and a lathe.

Do you seriously think R&G fit bungs to every bike then crash them to make sure their theory stands up to reality.

£1000 alpinestars leathers should be much much better than a set of £200 "lesser" brand ones as they have loads of money for R&D and can afford to use better materials and techniques than the cheaper brand can. Unfortunately for them (and fortunately for us), if you are to believe the tests it doesn't always work out that way.

A brand name is a powerful thing. It's why some dozy bint will pay £500 for a pair of shoes.

Some of the people over on SV650.org hate the R&G's. I personally have them myself as I dont see anyone else out there that has the same Kudos.

I think in the end the trouble is that each accident is unique and different factors need to be taken into consideration.

When it came to bungs for me I didnt hesitate and went for R&G, for the same reasons as have already been posted. They wouldnt have come as far as they have without some kind of performance.

They don't need to, they've got us to do it for them.

Walk around a club race paddock - you'll see more R&G bungs than all other makes put together.

They wont crash a bike to test them. They will be able to get hold of alot of bikes and work out the angle of it lying on its side and develop the bung from there, i guess?

Not after looking at my bike in the Lakes they didn't - all critics had them fitted within a week Wink

It's not so much the nylon as the steel used for the bolt and the way they are attached to the frame or engine. Many of the cheaper versions use 'softer' steel so they suffer more from bending. Material cost per bung is going to be a couple of quid, but they need to cover development costs and overheads. The name just helps to bumps up the price.

But someone could copy the design easily, exact same shape, size material ect, effectively bypassing the r&d stage and put out an equally good product for a lot less. I'm sure it's possible for anyone with a lathe and a brain to track down some suitable materials and make some just as good.

That's what i'm saying, the product itself isn't anything revolutionary or special, it's a couple of quids worth of nylon and a bolt. I just wouldn't dismiss all of the cheaper ones simply because they don't have a brand name (though to be fair most of the ones i've seen so far don't look much cop).

Yeah, but do you want to be the one to test the theory (with your bike and panels as the bet)?

They do copy the design, but can't be bothered to use decent material, and thats where they fail. if anyone has a R&G one thats knackered then I'll get it material tested at work and knock up a copy, see how much it costs. Do they have a patent on them?

Don't forget that they do different kits for different bikes. The kit for my old ZX6R even came with a replacement water bottle (with a build in sealed hole) to allow the bar through where it sits, as it is the best mounting point.

And to be honest, its that little bit of extra though that makes the difference for me. Slightly offtopic but I think the same applies to K&N. Their dynojet kits are about £110 for some jets and needles, easy to copy, in fact I think copies were for sale on Ebay at one point. The thing is they've spent a fair amount of time and effort developing the kit to make sure it works. I had a problem with one of the kits I brought due to the tuning I had done to the bike. Their aftersales support is superb. Personal reply to emails and the bloke on the phone definately knew what he was talking about. They told me what needed changing and where I could get the bits cheap, cost me just £7 to go from a stage 3 to a stage 7, and they found a place close by that did power runs for £15 and full diagnostic runs for £35.
