When is the time to replace the piston on a 125 NSR? Any suggestions?
I have a -98 and it has run about 23500km.

Hi

Honda dont specify a mileage, but I would be tempted to do it with that kind of mileage (OK, kilometage). It may be fine, it may just want some rings or the piston might be worn, but no real way to tell without pulling it apart.

All theb est

Hi

There are particular measurements to be taken from the piston, rings and barrel. Rings are easy to check (just check the ring end gap), piston a bit more difficult (use a micrometer to check the piston diameter front to back at the point 15mm from the bottom of the piston skirt, and check the clearance between the ring and the piston vertically), and the barrel needs a special tool for measureing the bore very accuratly. Fortunatly the barrel will wear very little, if at all (the plating is very hard compared to he piston and rings)

All the best

Thanx for your advice!!

I removed the piston. It didn´t look so bad.
I checked the piston and the cylinder with a micrometer. The cylinder was hardly worn at all but the piston was a little worn. I´ve already put a new one in place but the bike isn´t ready yet , so i havn´t tried it out yet. Ii´s quite much work to replace the piston and you should know what U are doing. But if the piston is too much worn it will damage the cylinder. I can hardly wait to get the bike ready so i can go for a ride!!
All the best to bikers!!

Hi

Doubt they will check it. Far too much work (they would have to charge several hours extra work).

If you have replaced the piston then you have to run the engine in again

All the best

I´ve heard that the new piston should be run in after 500KM, is that correct ? I've also heard that you should put an extra 1% of 2 stroke oil in the fueltank. How much rpm can i use when i'm running in?

Thanx for your tips
All the best!

Hi

I normally keep to half the red line for 500km, then increase by 1000rpm per 100km after that. Maybe a tad OTT but better safe than sorry

All the best
