				| Posted: 01:00 - 16 Sep 2006 Post subject: HELP PLEASE, how to stop bandages from sticking.... | |
				|
 |
				| well i fell of bike last week, and cut/grazed my knee pretty badly.. i have seen the doctor 3 times, and had the knee bandanged 3 times,
2 times with iodine ( check spelling ) the bandages came of so easily without hurting one bit,

how she put a dry dressing on it, and has given me " adhesive surgical dressings " to apply to myself when im sleeping/ going out etc..

well i been out on bike for a bit, and just went to take the dressing off, and well... IT FUCKIN HURT.. took me well over 30 mins of pulling this dressing from the skin, it had stuck to it, and was really painfull everytime i peeled a ltitle bit off, and also was bleading..

i cleaned the blood up a bit with a tissue, and the tissue started sticking to the wound,

now when i goto bed i think i will have to put another dressing on, and dont want to.. as i dont want to go through the same pain as a min ago.. one of the worse pains i can remember TBH, and im not over reacting lol

i also dont want to goto sleep with an open wound, incase it sticks to bedding/ quilt etc..

has anyone got any advise? or will i have to stay up all night

 thanks in advance.. Matt

				| rub on the cut?? (OUCH!)
 or stick on the dressing

is it a certainty that it will not stick again?

because i would rather not sleep and sit in the same place until it scabs/goes dry than go through that pain again

 thanks.

				| I will be honest, I dont believe in plasters and bandiads, leave it open it will heal much faster.
Don't worry about the quilt, if you are that worried wrap it with a towl for the night.

				| i didnt have anything in place this time, as the nurse didnt put anything on it apart from the dressing,
i tried to wet the dressing, but it didnt work, still killed as i pulled,

theres no skin on my knee... just a pinkish bloody mess, thats wet.. and sticks to anything that touches it.. eg toilet paper i used to clean the blood

as i was pulling the dressing off you could see it was really stuck to the cut, and was quite a bit of it was bleesing as i pulled the dressing off

its now stinging badly now as i speak

				| I'm with Siggi on this one... Vaseline! Thing is, if you leave it scab over it will scar worse than if it's kept covered! So I imagine when the dressing is pulled off, it takes any scabbing with it, thus helping it heal from the inside out. (I imagine)
You can buy non stick (
) pads from chemists etc... Primapore (sp) is something I have tonnes of as it has that shiny side which tends to stick less than normal dressings, comes in lots of different sizes, and has is sticky like a plaster around the edges... Perfect just to slap on for bedtime! Get someone down to boots to get some for you! ____________________

				| I agree with Shorty, the antiseptic powder is great stuff. Ive used it on burns mostly, and its just the ticket. Dries the wound so it doesnt seep, and since its dry, you dont need to cover it as much, let the air at it and it will heal so much faster.____________________

				| melolin pads are very good, just 1 of them, cut to size, and a bandage over it, Very good.
Or, just whack some antiseptic cream or spray on it, then leave it open, it will never heal if it doesnt get the chance, You say you dont want to leave it open in bed? its just gonna keep sticking...
Leave it open to the air.

I had the same problem when i came off a skateboard last year, took ages to heal, because i kept bandaging it, But after about a week, i just left it open.
you can tell its healing when its open too.

				| I had a pretty bad cut to the hand some years ago, and had a similar problem of dressings sticking to the wound.
I eventually settled on soaking the bandage in warm water, eith in the sink, or occasionally sitting in the bath. It sometimes took up to 20 or 30 minutes to soak it off at first.

As already mentioned though, repeatedly covering the would will often prolong the healing process. I'm not a big fan of bandages and dressings etc, so once the initial scab has formed etc, I tend to leave wounds open to the air.
Just make sure you keep it open to the air, and keep it clean.

				| The best dressings are the silver ones with charcoal in, my mam got me one for work, what they do is the silver kills the rubish and the charcoal sucks up all the puss ect so the cut drys out at the same time as having a bandage on but these are very expensive and i think only the hospital can get these
either way have a look if need be they really do work.
