I passed my test years ago , but this question has always bugged me.

by my question is this if you are asked to do an emergency stop and you bring an ABS bike will this be allowed? , or considered cheating?.

Since with ABS you just grab a big hand ful of the brake and it stops and won't lock the front,

Or will the examiner cancel the test and rebook? , since ABS on a bike is easy to spot .

Not particularly relevant to me however just horrible curiousity.

(then again I did my car test on a car with ABS too I think)

any thoughts?

Why would you have to rebook?

If you state clearly that youre on an ABS equiped bike then its their decision whether they allow it or not but Ive never read or heard anything saying ABS is a cheat, at the end of the day they are more concerned with a safe stop and that you carry out observations and the precedures after that correctly.

I wouldnt worry mate.

I agree, a safe and controlled stop is good enough, not forgetting the clutch, the lifesavers before pulling the bike into the side of the road, not travelling too far after the application of the brakes and not falling off the bike. Perhaps the actual stopping of the bike is only a small part of the excercise.

Just passed my test on a CBF500 with ABS - no questions were asked or any problems with doing it on that bike.

main things they look for are:

Safe and controlled stop in the shortest SAFE distance, not the shortest possible distance. keep the rear on the ground, don't lock it up and don't fishtail....

Is the bike ABS rear as well? it's still possible to momentarily lock up the rear If it's practically off the ground so as long as you don't leave any rubber on the road then it'll be fine...

ABS doesn't stop you in the shortest possable distance. It helps you controll the bike better should the wheels start to lock.

I always turn my ABS off on dry roads as I can stop quicker (if I need to) without it on. As for the ABS to work it releases the brakes the second the wheel starts to lock then re applys them.

I asked about this on my training, and they said ABS makes no difference. All new cars have it now too. Only works over 8MPH ,so it's still possible to lock the wheels.

To someone that doesn't know his/her limist it probably wont but if you know your limits and your bikes It does make a difference believe me, I can get my back wheel off the ground baking with the ABS off, Impossible with it on. I can also outbrake the ABS if I try...But the secret is to do it in an emergency. Its like when new bikers go into a corner fast, most panic brake, when usually all they need to do is tip the bike in more.

thing about ABS is that it is there when you need it , ie when some guy brakes harshly infront of you and you were a fool with the 2 second rule,

its a bit late to calmly think oh shite lets progressively brake , while in a controled stop when I'm expecting it I can stoppie pretty high.
