Would anybody buy a 22 year old crash helmet? I only ask as I am looking for a lid for baby stalk (he's 15) and I thought that crash helmets had a limited shelf life????

Cheers,
Stalk.

they have a "life" after which the material starts to break down but a lid that old will be no were near as safe as a modern cheap one. DOnt put your kids head in that

you'd be safer buying a new gold stamped helmet, you can get them for around 30 quid Thumbs Up

Two questions:

Arrow How do you know it will fit?
Arrow How do you know whether its in a safe state or not?

How to buy a helmet.

Go to a shop, try on on lots of different helmets, fint one that fits and that you're happy with, pay money for helmet (This last part may be replicated with paying less by buying the same make and model online or from elsewhere, but the safety/comfort factors are still valid...)

No mate, thats too old even for me. My son was a lot younger when he got on the back of my bike. Least I could do was make sure his gear was semi decent, If he came off the back then you want to know you've done what you can.

I did get him a second hand helmet but it was off a mate, his wife used it once and didn't like it.

I'm pretty sure the hemet was not produced in 1985, those designs on FM helmets are far more recent. I'm pretty sure its the "axe" model, they can be had for £30 new.

Isn't there a law saying ANY UK approved helmet is approved forever such that I can go get a helmet from the 1950s made from wood and it'd still be legal (if not safe) , I saw this older biker on an even older triumph and his helmet probably dated back from the battle of Jutland.

They're uber crap helmets. Polycarb shell, flimsy feel, poor lining, crap buckle, noisy as hell and they're made for people with short, fat heads Laughing No wonder they've been sat on a shelf for so long!

The only reason I'd touch it would be to throw it in the bin! Rolling Eyes

Or maybe if I was feeling artistic and I had it hanging round at home, I'd do something with it.... which would certainly not include putting on my head!
