Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in a jet-powered car while filming for the programme.
The presenter, 36, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary which has a special neurological unit.

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene and a hospital spokesman described him as "critical".

The BBC confirmed the presenter had been injured during a Top Gear shoot.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at Elvington airfield, a former RAF base, in North Yorkshire.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

The presenter was born in Birmingham, educated in Yorkshire and lives near Cheltenham.

In addition to presenting Top Gear for the BBC, he also fronted Brainiac on Sky One until recently.

Really hope he pulls through ok. He makes top gear watchable, brainiac funny and writes a good column in MCN but through all that gives the impression of being a really nice guy.

I hope this maybe makes him and the other presenters (to a much lesser extent James May) realise that it is not a game. Throwing a car around on a track, trying to do 300mph in a jetcar etc. is dangerous, particularly if you are pissing around and not concentrating. They are only human beings like me and you even if it is TV. Especially seen as how their driving talent seems to be relatively 'amateur' at best.

Well the BBC site has changed the heading from critical to seriously hurt, which sounds a little better.

A spokesman has also said that he is "Stable"

What a ledgend,,,not many people can tell ther grandkids they survived a 300mph crash. Good luck to him. Thumbs Up

He had already made a successful run and hit 300mph (but they are unclear as to whether he brok ethe record of 300.3mph). The crash happened on the planned final run at 280mph. The car started veering to the right so the parachutes deployed but he hit the grass, and of course once that happened it flipped, god knows how many times and ended up dug into the ground upside down. He was drifting in and out of conciousness and apparently complaining of lower back pain at the scene.

Hope he pulls through.
