the government could at least try to disprove stuff , l

ike the moon landings which I am sat on the wall with , if they wanted people believe they'd just turn the hubble to the landing site and you'd see foot prints.

Refusing to do this just adds fuel to the fire.

They don't need to.

One of the Apollo missions put a mirror on the moon. I hear that you can bounce laser beams off of it. That'd prove it.

Hubble probably doesn't have the range of focus to look at an object as close as the moon.

Also, if you know anything about the politics of the time, and the fact that rocket development really meant ICBM's not spaceships, then you'd understand that it was sort of done to tell the public that all the rockets that the US and the Russians were making weren't nukes, but in fact for flying to the moon.

NASA Etc wanted to go there, the US Government didn't want to pay for it. They were sort of maneuvered into a spot where they had to admit that all of the rockets were for war, or they had to pony up the money for flying to the moon. NASA weren't stupid and knew they could do it. They also knew that better moon rockets meant better ICBM's. The US Government coughed up the dough (pretty much because JFK said it would be done, and they didn't want to dishonour a dead president) So NASA went and did it.

There was no conspiracy, no cover up. They just threw loads of money and loads of clever people at making missiles. As a by product, they learned how to get to the moon at the same time.

The amusing thing is, now there is no cold war and no real need for ICBMs... there is no technology to go to the moon! It was all lost. They still have some records, but modern digital electronics for example don't have the same resistance to radiation that transistor based computers did back in the sixties. They'd have to do it the same way, or come up with some radiation resistant CPU's. Which don't currently exist.

Plus Health and Safety probably wouldn't let the astronauts fly in the same amount of radiation as they did back in the sixties!

I'm certain it happened, and it is impressive. But it certainly wasn't impossible!!

Nowadays it would probably be harder. They would have to reinvent the wheel so to speak.

The Very Large Telescope (VLT) can show details only as small as 130m at the distance of the Moon, and so it is not surprising that no images sharp enough to resolve the lander are possible.

The Hubble space telescope can resolve objects as small as 86 metres at the distance of the Moon; again, not good enough to settle this issue

ther's a big difference between spotting somethign the size of a planet, and looking at something a couple of feet across.

They use ordinary laptops, but the shuttle doesn't go through the Van Allen radiation belts!

They do have some eighties analogue electronics as a backup, but apparently they use ordinary laptops bungeed to the bulkheads for the mission info.
