I am curious to know people who cover large amount's of mileage over the course of a year and how they find their particular bike fair's with it. So your bike, montly mileage, how far you go on a tank (fuel consumption), comfort, rough cost of running per month. Generally how you find it copes with it, and also if you also use it for it, how fun your bike is.

Anything less than 12,000 mile's a year is too little. I will soon be covering around 2,500 mile's a month to give you an idea of the sort of mileage I'm interested in knowing about.

Thank's for any help.

I cover a lot of miles recently on ZX6R's and I have no problem with it. Even over long motorway distances. Thumbs Up

170 miles to a tank on the motorway easily (at sensible speeds)

Tyres depends completly on how you ride it.

Running costs are not that bad on the ZX6R's I keep the oil changed every 2000 miles religiously and keep it serviced up.

I still love the bike. everything about it still makes me grin. Thumbs Up

Oh and the bike proves reliable allways. Thumbs Up

I must do 15k miles or so a year. I ride a few different bikes but my main one is the KLE500.

I would guess I get around 45mpg out of it. Tank lasts 100 miles or so.

I would stress that my bikes are purely toys and for my own enjoyment so I don't really care how much they cost to run.

I do seem to go through a distressingly large amount of engine oil and tyres. Just under 20 litres of oil per year for routine servicing.

As for coping, well the wheels haven't fallen off it yet.

Define "high mileage". The average mileage for a 'bike is two or three thousand miles a year.

My Fazer is six years old, and has done 41k miles with nothing more than tyres and a couple of chain and sprocket changes (thank you Scottoiler!).

Unfortunately I can't commute on the 'bike any more, so I've become a weekend rider - but I still manage a respectable mileage all year, in all weathers.

Most 'bikes will stand the miles mecahnically, but cheaper 'bikes tend not to have as high quality components, nor as good a finish. This means they'll look scruffy, but should still work fine.

My friend does over 200 miles a day commuting from Norwich to London so I reckon that makes him eligible. He rides an FJR1300, has it serviced regularly, and says the bike runs as sweet as a nut.

If my dodgy mental arithmetic is right 2,500 a month is 30,000 a year. It’s gonna cost you a fair bit in consumables and servicing and it’ll annihilate the bike’s 2nd hand value. Is this commuting or have you got yourself a bird at the other end of the country? And what bike are you on?

I used to average about 2000 miles a month and I though that was high! I didn’t really worry too much about the cost. I never bothered to calculate my fuel bill because that’s going to be similar or worse in a car, but I did spend a small fortune on tyres, brakes, chains, oil etc. Oh, and I used to wear out boots at an alarming rate as well as wearing through the fingers of the glove on my clutch hand.

I did all basic servicing myself, only trusting the bike to the professionals for stuff I didn’t fancy or didn’t have the right tools for (like valve clearances and carb balancing). I remember one garage clean up where I discovered I was hoarding well over 40 litres of used engine oil. If you don’t have shaft drive get a Scottoiler, it’ll quickly pay for itself in increased chain life.

This was on a 1990 Yamaha RXS100, a 1992 Yamaha XJ600S Diversion and my current bike a 1994 Honda CBR600FR. The CBR has been the most comfortable and practical if not the cheapest of the lot.

Mileage related failures have been few and far between and mostly on the Diversion. It started misting oil from the head gasket, needed new clutch plates, several wheel bearings and the loom even caught fire because of corroded connectors. The CBR has been ultra-reliable except for a bit of electrical nonsense (corroded wiring again) although I have some suspicions that the cam chain is finally on its last legs.

I now commute a mere 9 miles a day round trip and I’m loving it. I mostly use my spare bike, another RXS100 because the CBR is barely even warm by the time I get to work and it seems a bit pointless.

I do around 25,000 miles per year which is why l have a hack bike for comuting and genral use, thinking of getting an old BMW bike soon as the FX400R is not great for the motorway.

With reguards to the FX400R its great on the north cicrler and riding in london traffic as filtering is easy with such a thin naked bike, tyres are £30 each and l just change the oil (cheap car oil) every 3-4k, fuel useage at £14 for 100 miles is shit though.

I am not sure of my exact mileage but it's over 12k a year.

VFR400
Over 1000 miles a month
I do around 110 miles on a tank.
It's fairly comfy, depends on the distance. I've ridden for 2 hours with no problems.
Rough cost of running, I'd say around 100 quid. That's only fuel, depends if chain and sprockets needed etc.
Bike copes fine!
And it's a hell of a lot of fun, handling is so good it would challenge a fair few bikes on corners!

Yes, that's about right, somewhere between 25 and 30,000 miles a year. Mainly due to a 100 mile commute each day. Add in pleasure riding which some weekends will be none, other's will be lot's, normally around the 100 mile mark, and it all add's up. Have a rough idea of cost's in terms of consumables, taking into account unforseen cost's will be the main issue. Re-sale price isn't being taken into consideration, I will most likely use the bike until it dies.

Going to be doing this on a GPZ until february, then will most likely purchase a newer bike, probably a Fazer. Which will then go into storage for a long time after 6-8months of use. Laughing

What sort of GPZ?

I used to have a GPZ500 as my only form of transport. The engine off that bike has done over 70,000miles now (with three top end rebuilds, only one of which was necessary, the other two were me sorting out fuckups made by the first garage) and is residing in my KLE500.

The only reason I broke it for spares is because I gave it to a mate who bought another bike about a year later. By that time, it was pretty much worthless (having been crashed by me a number of times) and I already had another GPZ so spares it was.

Yeah, consumables seem to be the ballache with doing high mileages, tyres and oil in particular but I seem to spend a fair bit of time changing wheel bearings and fiddling with brakes too. It's all routine servicing but it can take up time.

Sorting out all the crap assosciated with winter commuting can take up a bit of time too, painting exhausts, de-manking brakes and such.

An anti-corrosion spray like F365 or similar is a godsend through the winter if you don't want to spend hours of your life washing the damned thing.

Hi

These days probably only do about 12k by bike, and that is split between several bikes.

Most miles in a year on a single bike was about 22000. On the FZ750. Petrol cost a fortune even then. Tyres depends on what you use and how you ride (on normal tyres for commuting about 9k~10k a set). C&S will do at least 15k. Brake pads about the same.

All the best

Keith

i do a fair few miles but havent had this bike long though. ive got a zx7r, i had just over 110 miles from £8 the other day, filled it up thinking it should be empty by now and was suprised that was all it had used. i can imagine ill get through tyres fairly quick but then i have got avon vipers on it as i use it for a toy as well. gonna change the oil amd filter every few thousand miles but thats only £25 and a 20min job. But most of all i find it quite comfortable to be sat on for a while.
