first i'm slipping between two lanes of traffic and clip a van's mirror, it was only slow (2-4 mph) and it was just by about an inch

as i waited at the lights and readjusted my mirror i looked into it and saw the van driver pick up his phone while looking flustered, dial a number and start chatting away, i thought "GAY!" if he's phoning the cops or his insurers.................i can only assume

does anyone know if i could get a jobsworth copper stop me one day and take me in for failure to stop at an accident or would this be ignored by any authority as a "just one of those everyday events".???

Thanks in advance for any answers on this, it's kind of bugging me,
i've done this before but not seen this reaction from a driver.

10 minutes later i'm overtaking some cars when i see that one of them is indicating right, by this time i'm almost on top of him, as he turns he hasn't got a clue that i'm diving on my forks less than a meter away from his door, oooooooooooh ya bastad it was a DB9 aswell, that would have been a real bad day, anyway i'm here now
just thinking to myself, if i leave late i should arrive late, if i try and make time up i can get into trouble, (lesson for the day)

i'm watching children of men at the moment, and it seems quite good, just seen a ambush scene where a biker and pillion get doored on purpose Shocked

So the van didn't stop either, and he was using his mobile whilst driving? You've not been reported to the cops or insurance. Wink

I thought yiou had to stop at a serious accident where there's costly damage done? Otherwise don't you have 24hours to report an accident?

You only need to report an accident in the event of damage being caused or injury sustained.

More to the point why did you stop with your licence plate in full view of him... if i clip a mirror i make a split second judgement based on the car/driver if im gonna stop, if not im off either filtering away or like a rude arrogant bastard i quickly accelerate infront of the car infront of whoever i hit as to obscure the licence plate...

be a man if you accidentally clip a mirror then say youre sorry.
if someone clips you and drives off how do you feel?
if you caused no damage then everyone goes away happy.
if you cause damage then pay up.
as for the guy advocating run away.how about this "i was in my van and i knocked this twat on a bike over but i got away before he could get my reg" .
people are too willing to blame others and claim for "what those bastards did" but are happy to "get away with" the same crimes.

Bullshit, if you are comparing a Van knocking off a biker to a biker clipping a wing mirror you need to address something...

As or me i am 20 i live in North West London, almost the worst age and definately the worst location for insurance, i am paying WELL over the odds already (my insurance costs 3 times what i paid for my bike)... if you think i am loosing my no claims bonus for a fuckin wingmirror of some idiot who never checks them (because they had to be pretty fuckin close to the centre for it to happen) think again....

The law states that if you are involved in an accident, no matter how minor, you must stop and provide your insurance details to anyone reasonably requiring them.

If you are unable to stop at the time then you must report it to the Police as soon as possible, and in any case within 24 hours.

The penalties for failing to stop are quite severe.

I once had a minor "accident" on the Fazer - I was filtering around the M25 in the rush hour and clipped a car with my pannier (I forgot I had them on Embarassed ).

Owing to the traffic, and not knowing which car I'd clipped (it took me a few moments to realise what I'd done), I didn't (and couldn't safely) stop. Instead, I went to my local Police station the next morning to report it.

Nothing more came of it, but if the car driver had got a note of my registration number and then reported my for "failing to stop", I'd covered myself.

As for overtaking a car signalling to turn right... well, luckily nothing came of it, and hopefully you learnt something.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's unlikely you caused any damage to the van mirror, the van driver is unlikely to worry about it even if you did ( assuming he's not an owner driver of course) and even if he did, the cost of the damage if any was caused will be so minor to put right it wouldn't really be worth bothering about.

I've clipped my wing mirrors with other cars whilst driving about 10 times and have never stopped? Confused

I just hope the next person who scratches my bike or car is just like you, not only admiting that they were to blame but also telling the police they did it. Maybe you could fill out my claim form as well, or just give me the cash?

If theres no witnesses then there wasn't an accident, if the police actually follow up a complaint and use the shock tactic of knocking on your door just tell them you have no idea what they are talking about.

Probably not, no.

But in this case, reporting the accident to the Police was risk-free: If the car driver had got my number and reported it, I'd covered my back; if the car driver hadn't got my number then I've not lost anything.

I'll be honest that my motivation was to cover my back. The penalty can be:
6 months imprisonment and/or fine
Endorsement with 5-10 penalty points
Discretionary disqualification.

You only have to stop if you cause damage but, if you don't stop, how do you know if you've cause damage or not?

A few poor attitudes coming to light.

Whoever said 'If there was no witnesses then there was no accident' needs a good fucking shake. You sound like the kind of person that would hit my car in tesco's then fuck off 'because nobody seen it'. Disgusting.

I was pricing up parts for a car last week and one of the wing mirrors would cost £165. I dont even know if that includes the paint. If some scumbag decided to hit it and take flight I would be seriously pissed off, and you wonder why people hate bikers Rolling Eyes

right this exact thing happened to me, except the driver of the car started following me and beeping its horn and flashing its lights i thought it was gunna run me off the road so i took off,
a few weeks later the police turned up at my door,
i said to them i don't remember clipping any ones mirrors but it was a possibility that i had but don't remember doing it,
the policeman said that was fine, the other driver didnt have any witnesses from other motorists who saw it, and he said that he just had to follow through to complete his paper work, i said i would pay if the guy was sure it was me but the cop said nah don't worry he can't prove anything,
so there you go, deny that it happened, (unless he pulled someone over at the time)

and you know, all this came by me being late, i don't usually clip mirrors i can size up the gap pretty well most times but this time i was in a rush, however i was going slower than walking pace so chrome versus black plastic at that speed equals........ f#ck all really

and as for the overtaking bit, it was just a side road and i was in a hurry not wanting to do 30 on a 30 road but more 40 on the wrong side of the road, "if a courier can do it so can i" Rolling Eyes hmmm, thats maybe why their bikes look so caned.

BTW who says the brakes on a hornet are soft??? Wink

The point is I'M NEVER RUSHING AGAIN!!!

i've taken some risks in the past but this was mixed with the attitude of "i don't care cos i'm late" nutter type of riding. Embarassed

never again, i'm not a kid and i think i have some things to live for Thumbs Up

I dident say it and i dont agree with it in theory... but that is how the world works... some arsehole minicab driver had me off in a SMIDSY... no witnesses = me having about 1.6k of bike collecting dust and me riding a fuckin deathtrap while i wait for the MIB/Lawers to do something....

I too usually size up gaps and can count on one hand the times i have clipped a mirror... its either because A) The driver deliberately swevred as they saw me filtering and i was past the point of no return, in which case fuck them.

B) They dont use their mirrors and hog the lane and the middle ensuring bikes cant get past (not on purpose)... in which case fuck them

C) No fault of their own i clipped the mirror out of bad riding... In which case 9/10 i will stop...

As i say... if it was A or B and you think i am loosing my NCB think again... Bad attitude or not... thats how im livin.

TheDon,

I know thats the way it works but its not something that should be encouraged. I am in a similar position as yourself, I was reversed over in a carpark last may and the other party has lied her fat face off ever since.

I am not mature enough to face up to my decisions when the financial (insurance) implications are so harsh on us young'uns... Obveously if i was involved in anything more serious than a mirror clipping i would stop... Well there you have it
