Well, due to certain circumstances I have to give up road biking .
But, I won't be giving up biking full stop. I want to start racing motocross. So naturally, I have a couple of questions:
1. I've got my heart set on a CR125, how much I be looking to pay for a decent one? (second hand).
2. What are the service intervals? I'd be changing the oil and filter after every meeting, but what about top end rebuilds etc?
3. How much are the rebuilds likely to cost me?
4. I will probably be going to a lot of tracks for practices so are the rebuilds going to be more frequent? (bit of a stupid question really, but there might be some variables).
I understand the great risk involved in this sport and am willing to take it.
I can probably blag a full set of MX clothing (incl boots and helmet) for xmas, but i'd like to have the bike first, wouldn't really want to be riding a Honda with lime green gear.
Cheers guys ! ____________________ 125 trail bike, custom bars, handguards etc. - ?500.

enduro is much better IMO, i got fed up with rebuilds all the time on my cr, plus you gotta fill it with decent oil all the time, your ment to service after every race but most people dont, as for rebuilds all bikes are diferent, i tended to do 6 races then put a new piston and rings in, if you leave it till it goes wrong then your looking at a hefty bill. there quite high maintenance. plus you gota do conrods, bearings, rebores ect.. proper crossers are good fun but the cost involved puts me off and im a mechanic so do all the labour myself, get a 4 stroke enduro and go green laning, much cheaper and just as much fun.. good luck PS: a half decent cr can be found for around 600 notes or a nice newer one for the grand mark. i just sold a 98 kx 250 for 600 notes, just had rebuild, new graphics ect. |

Varies from £500 to £2000 depending on which year you go for, have a look at ebay, muddystuff.co.uk and in the back of TMX.

You'd be changing gearbox oil fairly regularly, cleaning/changing plugs and other minor maintenance too. If you get hold of the workshop manual to go with the bike everything will be listed with intervals (i.e. "every race" or "every 10 hours").

As an example budget around £80 for a new piston kit and gaskets, £70 for a conrod kit. Labour is free if you do it yourself otherwise it gets expensive! A few more examples: you might be looking at £40 to have the barrel rebored, £35 to have the crank rebuilt... it's hard to predict what you will need to do really but you can work out routine servicing costs from totting up the jobs in the manual.

Yes, as you'd expect more use equals more maintenance. The main maintenance intervals are in hours, so it's quite easy to keep track of when youre bike needs some work doing. Practice hours aren't quite as "expensive" in terms of maintenance as race hours, but you'll still need to keep up with the TLC. ____________________ 3516 Miles, 11 Countries |

Is there a reason your heart is set on motocross ?
Have you thought about Track and Trail or Hare and Hounds ?
Surely it would be wise to start at a lowish level then build from that.
Reasons are many, mainly financial, mostly from a "pounds per mile per grin" .
IMHO full on motocross is better learnt from a very early age to be even slightly competative, these boys mean business right from the off
Go and watch you local club racers , totally dedicated nutters, |
