Haven't really understood what you're saying...

Are you asking if it's legal to have red LED's flashing on and off at the rear of your bike?

If you are, I'd put money on saying it isn't. People could easily confuse them with your actual brake light and think you're braking when you're not, or worse, not braking when you are Confused

I mean seperate leds that come on with the standard steady lights (like cars have a row of led brake lights in the rear window, but flashing) if that makes more sense..

Ah right...

Well I'm no expert but I'd *assume* that if it's legal for a car to have them, its very likely just as legal for a motorcycle to have them.

Thats the thing, never seen a car with flashing ones Razz i know the main brake should not flash, but an "auxiliuary" brake light dunno.. like with indicators are supposed to some up to certain critera, but repeters/side lights dont (i.e. you can have normal main indicators but as many amber led's as you like)

I'd try to make it so it only worked with a switch flicked, like for fog, early morning, that sort of thing maybe..

It was just a thought... tey coudl do with a helpline like the nsh has so you can find out whats legal or not.. i suspect only traffic coppers would know if it was/wasn't anyhow..

See, what I don't understand completely is what you mean when you say "flashing".

Do you mean fast-flashing? Like an indicator? Because that's what's confusing me and if you do mean fast flashing, then I'd advice against it due to it could be confused with your actual brake light Neutral

But.. if it was just on the same circuit as your normal brake light I can't see a problem....

Sorry if I'm not grasping the point - I am running on nothing but Red Rooster right now.

Think ive had 2litres of pepsi in the last hour so yeh i kow the feeling..

yep it would be on the same circuit.. yeh i'm not sure how much of a good idea it is.. it'll get attention allright, got theidea from a brake light modulator thing they sell in the states which flashes when you apply the brakes which would defenately not be legal, but its as its a seperate one it may not count.. btw it would be on with the running rear light, so it would pluse more than flash..

For example.. you can have any colour leds or anything if its attached to YOU and not the bike! when its reeeealy foggy ive put on a flashing push bike light on my bag (which i'd be wearing)

Dunno if i'd actually do it, its more curiosity at the moment really.. it would be good for really shitty situations like the dreaded fog or torrential rain..

(thanks for the replys though Thumbs Up)

On a little side note, how many brake lights must a bike have. Can you have just one bulb or must it be 2? Just asking as thinking of tidying up the rear of the bike.

I was taught that it was better to flash the brake lights with a couple of pulls on the lever prior to breaking heavily i.e. from 60 to 30 or to lean on the lever slightly even if just using engine braking. A flashing brake light will draw more attention than a solidly on one. Flash it twice then brake...

You can just have one. You need to shine a white light onto the Reg. plate though. Bikes with two or more bulbs either have very wide or multiple brake lights.

Ta very much Thumbs Up

By replacing the standard brake light a new problem arsies Rolling Eyes White LEDs should be enough to light up the plate Wink

Lamps to show a steady light
13.—(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which automatically emits a flashing light.

(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of-

(a) a direction indicator;

(b) a headlamp fitted to an emergency vehicle;

(c) a warning beacon or special warning lamp;

(d) a lamp or illuminated sign fitted to a vehicle used for police purposes;

(e) a green warning lamp used as an anti-lock brake indicator; or

(f) lamps forming part of a traffic sign

Reference from here

So on flashing brake lights it's a NO in the UK. Which is a shame as they're allowed in the USA (you can get kits) and for bikes it appears a damn good idea for safety.

However, I think someone was doing a brake LEDs that fitted to your helmet (as high level brake lights). Think these were wireless. These could flash as they'd be attached to the rider, not the vehicle, so would be legal.

HTH Thumbs Up

The brake lights on the back of the riders helmet are a great idea. I don't think they'd need to be wireless really seeing as they'd be on the back of your helmet you wouldn't notice the wire I'm sure.

Further to that, I saw a Goldwing today with 5 brake lights! Shocked One on each pannier, two on the tail unit and one on a spoiler type thing on top of the topbox! Laughing
