Hello all,

I have just recently moved into a block of units and am having freak attacks when leaving the driveway on my bike. I live on a big main road where massive trucks and a lot of traffic drive past. I have to pull right out nearly onto the road to see if any cars are coming. If the road is clear I just ride straight out, but if the road is busy I freak out because I have to stop and wait and I get scared that if i drop the bike taking off onto the road then I will get squashed by the massive trucks!

The other day I just stopped and had to paddle back into my carport because I froze and my bloody next door neighbour (old man) is always watching when i ride past his window. It just makes me feel even more stressed! Confused

Any suggestions?

if you feel freaked just stop, close your eyes take a deep breath, breath out slowly, then do the same again, I find this helps calm me down massivly, might help for you?

And pratice makes perfect, the more you do it, the less scared you will feel,

some tips in there may help. I find visualising a stop sign when your freaking worked for me, i tried it once. And its quite normal to be freaking when you could be squashed by a large truck. Thumbs Up

Thanks Lozzy. I just need to calm down and stop and breathe. Im good at doing things fast etc, but when it comes to being calm and riding slowly etc I find it bloody hard. I just wish I could see if the trucks were coming or something.

Can you not get the council/or permission to put one of those bendy mirrors up so that your vision is extended?
(You have them in country lanes over there by farms etc?)

PS it was DF that suggested breathing techniques.... me personally I'd stick my fingers up to the old fogey who's making you feel self-conscious and hopefully he'll not bother again! Thumbs Up

EDIT
: By bendy mirrors I mean Convex lol like this...

Bendy Mirrors!

I find that not thinking about it and just doing it helps. I find this when I have to do tight u-turns, if I think about what im doing first i cant do it and normally end up on the curb! but if i just do it without pre thinking it out then its not a problem. Just my way of doing things.

Get a bloke to ride the bike onto the road for you first, and then you will only have to worry about traffic coming in the same direction as you Thumbs Up Women eh Rolling Eyes
