ok i just won a 1990 honda cbr 400 from ebay and its the tri arm.
im trying 2 get an insurance quote for it but i cant insure it as a 1990 as when i select 1990 it gives me the honda cbr 400 nc29 witch is the gularm version i think and when i select 89 it can chose ether the nc23 or nc 29.
so my question is have they made the nc29 as a triarm as well?
thanks
soz for bad spelling am just so happy i got or will have a 400 soon Very Happy

There is quite a lot of difference between the Tri arm (NC23) and the Gull arm (NC29). As the name suggests there is the small issue of the completely differently shaped swing arm. Wink

The bike may very well have been registered in this country in 1990, but it will be a physically older bike.

Your best bet is to telephone the insurance companies directly and explain that it is an imported bike.

There are parallel and grey imports.

Parallel are those imported by a dealer, grey were not.

Hey good choice of bike - I bought one myself in May of this year! Thumbs Up Very Happy
As has been said, the main difference between the two was the design of the swing arm - the Tri-arm has a heavy triangulated swing arm and the Gull-arm has an elbow bend in it to accomodate the exhaust pipe without compromising ground clearance! Both were based on the racing machines of the previous years to their manufacture. The Tri-arm was (obviously) first with the J and K models and then the Gull-arm as the L model and the Gull-arm has the 17" 6 spoke wheels front and rear, and the Tri-arm has the smaller 3 spoke wheels.

Now my bike was registered in this country in 1990, as the nc23 Tri-arm if that's any help to you - even though production of the nc29 Gull-arm began in 1990. Mind you the previous owner of my bike put the 17" Gull-arm wheels on mine and they look smart and the bike handles very well with them too! Thumbs Up

Best of luck and have loads of fun with it - I know I am with mine!! Laughing

Pm phantomtek, he has a couple of hpi checks available for £5. I doubt it will be recorded coming from a dealer, they normally hpi them themselves before taking them in. You could send him a message to ask if it is, by law he doesn't have to mention it in the ad but he does have to tell you if you ask.

It will have been crashed and thrashed though, that's only to be expected for a bike of that age and price. I also wouldn't take too much notice of the milage reading, buy on condition. But for the money you can't really expect too much. As long as it rides straight and doesn't have any really obvious faults it will be ok.

heya mate,
i got an nc23 aswell (pics in sig link). awesome machines, perfect trade up from a 125 imo. you got it for a nice price too.
www.400gb.co.uk will be helpful to you for any specific 400 related questions/problems, and (as it is here) it's a generally nice group.
on there aswell is a guy called Graeme France, he'll do you a 2nd hand restrictor kit for £15 Wink

I had a 1988 Tri-arm, great bike, reliable however the fairing are poorly designed and its quite hard to find parts for them.

considering their age and that they're grey imports, they're not "too" hard to get parts for. not new parts mind. their always seems to be a steady flow of people breaking for parts on fleabay and the like. you just gotta look harder it seems.

Difficulty sourcing parts for 400greybikes is a myth. David Silvers can get hold of pretty much standard Honda part, Wemoto are good at sourcing servicable items, and there are a fair few companies who can supply more trick items if you look a little harder. If in doubt, try Ebay or 400greybike.

You paid............how much?

I just paid £5 for a restrictor kit, and I'm going to fit it myself.

A total saving of £190.25 Dance! Least you didn't pay for it.

Glad you are happy with the bike though, let me know when you get the VIN and registration number.

Thumbs Up

12 months MOT is £20 or so nowadays (unless I need correcting), make sure they have actually serviced the bike as well, so many dealers, bike and car, neglect to do much at all to a vehicle when 'servicing' it.

And boy do you pay through the nose for that privalidge, a complete set of original fairings which were second hand mind, were more than a complete set for my 749.

So if you want to source parts like that its going to cost you, and if you were like me when i had a 400 a poor paying job your only real choice is breakers and ebay, Original fairings are like rocking horse shit.
