Do you have to disclose bike accidents when renewing your car insurance?

My husband got knocked off his bike last month, he reported it to his car insurer and they weren't bothered so I didn't bother to tell mine. However now I have to renew my car insurance and I don't know what to put. It was clearly not his fault (car overtaking on a bend went straight into him Shocked ) but they have three months before they have to admit liability so it is still an open claim.

I don't think for a moment this is a new situation - so what do you normally do about bike accidents when getting car insurance - and vice versa Question

Thanks!

I'd say you almost certainly have to tell them.

I think they'll ask you something like "Have you had any claims or losses in the past 3 years"

Maybe 5 years, not sure.

The fact you weren't at fault should help matters anyway.
Is it worth not declaring it? Only to have an accident and they find out, and wriggle out of a claim.

Isn't it all on computer anyway when you have an accident?

I don't see the problem, it was his bike and he has reported it to his insurance so why should it concern you? Confused

If you were pillion on the bike at the time you will have a 3rd party claim in any proceedings but you don't need to report that to anyone. You wouldn't tell them if you had been a pedestrian and hit by a car would you?

Unless it was you knocked him off? Laughing

...because he is a named driver on my car insurance.

(Mental note - he is also a named rider on my bike insurance and I definitely need to tell them - doh!) Confused

Take him off then, it will probably be cheaper anyway and he can still drive your car of he has 3rd party cover for other vehicles on his own insurance.

Otherwise yes, you should tell them, they will leave it as "open" until fault has been established I think.

Honesty is your best bet, if insurance companies can find any dirt on you in a future claim so they don't have to pay out then they will find it.

If you’re honest you have nothing to fear.

No, that's not an option. I want him to be able to drive my car and there is no way I would let him drive it 3rd party.

Guess I better get on the phone to all these insurance companies then. None of them have an option for "unsettled claim which definitely will be non fault" on their web sites Rolling Eyes

Wonder if I can claim back the extra premium they are bound to charge me on his insurance claim? Wink

I don't think they will up your premium for a claim, only for a loss if I remember correctly.

In 2004 I had 3 accidents in my car within 15 months, 2 of which weren't my fault and one was, but the one that was was me backing into a stationary vehicle and just scratching and denting it a bit.

The insurance then got really confusing cos at the time I was named driver on the other half's car policy and didn't have my own, but I had my own bike policy.

Started my own car policy just after and this is how it stands at the moment:

Arrow His car policy - shows all 3 of my accidents as he was policy holder at the time and I am still a named driver, 2 as "no fault" and one as "no loss" - premium not altered.
Arrow His bike insurance (him only) - doesn't show any of them, although reported to them. No premium change.
Arrow My bike insurance (me only) - doesn't show any of them although reported to them. No premium change.
Arrow My car policy (me only) - shows the 2 "non-fault" claims but not the fault one although reported to them because although I was the driver I was not the policy holder! So no premium change.

Best thing to do is tell them and wait to see what happens I suppose........

The complication is that I can't say it isn't a loss though as the drivers insurers haven't accepted liability yet.

Indeed. Sad
