Is your bike worth more than £50?

You want this:

https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/images/series4chain.jpg

with this:

https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/shop/images/product/squire65_lrg.jpg

and one of these:

https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/shop/images/product/new_hardie_lrg.jpg

as sold here:

https://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/shop/view_product.php?product=55

Around £210 to protect a few grand's worth of R1 is a no-brainer.

A ground anchor is a must-have.

Whilst my bike is ground anchored I also have a disc lock on the front and rear wheel, as well as a chain running through the front forks + tyre spokes.

I've heard that the alarmed disc locks are great for when you're parking the bike away from home - I will probably invest in one myself once I've gotten myself a bike worth protecting to that degree :p

Also get a good cover. Goes without saying I guess. Always cover your bike no matter what the weather.

Are you keeping it outside? Invest in a security light to cover the bike. Bike thefts increase a lot during the winter months due to the longer nights and shorter days. Darkness is the common scum's best friend - a half-decent security light will do wonders to deter them from coming near your bike.

If you've got quite a lot of funds consider investing in a CCTV system. Works well for house security as well as bike.

Of course the downside to locking your bike up to high heaven is that it makes thieves MORE likely to try breaking into your home first to take your keys and just unlock everything. If you live in a rough area perhaps think of getting a combination safe and putting your keys (and hey, other stuff) in there at night.

If you're going away at all, leave your keys with a trusted friend or family member and ask them to check on your house every now and again.

If your friendly with your neighbours ask them to just keep an eye out for any suspicious activities in the area.

I know it sounds like a lot but the sad truth is that a bike, no matter what bike, is ALWAYS a target for thieves, and probably every bike on the streets in the UK has been clocked at some time by a potential thief.

Not having a ground anchor is a serious liability in my opinion. I'd explore every possible avenue you have in trying to get one sorted out.

And having to put it on the road at weekends is crazy mate. If you live in a built up area I'll be surprised if it lasts a month. Not to mention that if your insurance says it's kept "Off the road" you're not going to be able to claim if it's nicked.

Hmm.

Are there any lamposts in the area you can chain the bike to? It's far from protected but it's much better than just a disc lock.

Remember that you can't leave it on the pavement Sad

I'd hate to be in your position. I dont want to sound all doom and gloom on you but I just dont want to see you lose your bike - it's hapenned to me too many times and it's one of the worst feelings I've ever felt.

I recommend talking to your landlord? or whatever.

I only have a disk lock and in all honesty I don't use it when parked up at home. My bike is in my back garden that has an 8ft wall round it, and is hidden by our extension as well.

FANTASTIC lockup

could do with a ground anchor though.

Agreed with most of the above - it needs to be chained to something solid. Lampposts will do.
Chain - the Almax is the only one to go for, everything else can be cropped using standard bolt croppers.
Sadly it's going to cost you more than £50 though - more like £200, but at least your bike should be as safe as it's going to be!
One last bit of advice - fit a cover over the bike. An R1 is very nickable, if it's totally covered theives won't recognise it as an R1, could be any manky old thing.

I mean, if you can't install a ground anchor in your garden and you're forced to park in the street with minimal security it, it's not the best idea to buy a very desirable bike. But hey ho, it's your prerogative! People can suggest things but you really don't have many options. The best you can hope for is to chain it to a lamp post with an almax, even then it's still fairly easy for them to cut because they can park their van with all their power tools right next to it.

Spend the £50 on petrol and enjoy riding it while you can because if that's all you will spend on security it will be gone soon.
