PostPosted: 11:55 - 29 Sep 2006    Post subject: Advice: New Job but don't want to work christmas!! Reply with quote

Hi

I'm currently at University and I had a job interview the other day with a home store, at the interview I told them (to help me get the job) I would happily work christmas eve. drive home that night and come back to work boxing day, however I have no intention on staying at Uni over Christmas. The day I finish Uni I'm going home to my family for my 3 week Christmas holiday.

I was wandering what the best way to tell them that unfortunately I am now currently ''unavailable'' to work Christmas any more due to family commitments.

I was thinking maybe getting my foot in the door after say 4 weeks then telling them that I have to go home at the begging of the Christmas Holidays.

Advice please Thumbs Up

Thanks WR

I was asked to work xmas day once for no extra pay and i quit. Simple as that. I know you dont want to look bad but employers expect there staff to work alot and run like machines. You have family commitments and thats more important to me than any job. My mum worked xmas day two years ago in that place i quit and she regretted it as she missed everything.

So either tell him or quit nearer the time. Sorry is it an xmas temp job?

Hi,

My contract will end around January and if its busy I will be kept on, but I'll doubt I'll need the money then anyways.

Going into the interview I knew they were going to ask about Christmas and I had already decided to tell them I would workit even though I knew full well I wont. I'm not doing a 14week semester without seeing my family, staying in the apartment for 2weeks over Christmas on my own, going home Christmas day, coming back to an emtpy apartment on boxing day and doing another 14 week semester.

I don't like looking bad or messing people around but they put so much on you to work Christmas that you feel you have to say yes just to have a chance with getting a job.

I dont want to tell them in my first week as they may just get rid of me straight away.

What excuse should I use? I was thinking saying maybe my Dad has booked a 3 week Christmas Holiday in America or something.

Plus I'll have a new nephew/neice Thumbs Up

Thanks WR

Hi,

I want to go Home on December 16th, I will not be working passed this point. I don't necessary want to quit I just dont want to work any day over my 3 week Christmas Holiday as I want to be with my family.

The problem is I told them I would work all over Christmas, but I said this to help me get the job.

Well in that case yuor best of coming out with the truth as yu will look bad leaving so early and they could get someone in to cover earlier then. Tell your boss and apoligise, at least yu are giving him time to look for another person, soubt he will sack you early for being honest but there are some wanker bosses out there.

call on the 15th and say you have come down with the Mumps. You have to be in isolation as its so contagious.

either that or claim glandular fever. both will put you out of the game for a long time and give ample explanation for you not being there over Xmas.

I caught mumps last year and had 4 weeks off work, but i was also confined to my room Sad

Cheffing requires most to work Xama eve, day, boxing day.
I made it quiet clear that Xmas day is a big no no as I have a son, and Xmas is for family. My bosses were happy with this as they have a 2nd chef.
Now we have new bosses it looks set to change.
I wont work it. so who knows what will happen Confused

You've probably been taken on temporarily specifically to cover the period up to, and over christmas.. Usually because they have staff with kids that will want time off...
Maybe you should have taken that into consideration before accepting the job? Rolling Eyes

I'd say that unless you have holidays pre-booked, you haven't got much hope of getting the time off. And be fair, in reality is a couple of hours on Christmas day so bad?

You could tell them that you're going to have an operation (at the hospital near your parents) and will be off for three weeks. Non-urgent operations for students are often planned around holidays - if that's what they want. Tell them you don't expect any sick pay since you've only just joined the firm, then you won't need a certificate. Or the operation could be cancelled at the last minute - but since you'd gone home for Christmas and they'd reworked the roster, you decided to stay there.

I didn't ask for opinions. I gave a situation and asked for some advice. Wheres the problem?? Yeah I know if I told the truth etc blah blah but if I said the truth, chances are I wouldn't have got the job, not been able to pay for my tuition fees and would be going home.
