Have any of you done this yet?

I went into tescos today and they had self-service check outs. You just scan the items yourself and then swipe your card etc to pay for it all.

Was quite good fun. Razz

That's a plus point to having them for the managers.

If you put an item on the belt that hasnt been scanned then it stops and has a fit. an operator then has to come over and scan a card and it starts working again.

Same with wine, beers etc. You scan them and then a light/siren goes off and you need to wait for a operator to come and check id etc.

We were drunk one night and went to Tesco to buy Ker Plunk we thought that by putting it through the self service no-one would notice that we were strange and buying ker plunk on a saturday night. On putting it through the check out it wouldn't scan so someone came over and went to look for a price, they couldn't find a price so they got another member of staff to help them, they then realised that it was the last one in the shop and they went to get an assistant manager to help get a price, when the assistant manager couldn't help they got the store manager who gave it to us for 3 pounds...I don't think ker plunk is worth all the embarrassement, can't look at the self service check outs anymore without going bright red Embarassed

Tesco self service checkouts bring an already dire experience to an all new low. Some daft woman living in the machine keeps shouting at you to put the item on the belt or in the bag which isn't big enough and complains when you take the bag off the scales.

Then it throws a hissy fit when you try and swipe your debit card as it couldn't cope with a Maestro (not that there's even any security, it doesn't ask for a pin, a signature or anything). Brick Wall Then it makes you sit there until some gormless oik comes and inspects your items to allow you to pay because you got a bottle of wine... Rolling Eyes

It's no wonder that there's never a queue for them, they just piss people off.

Yes, I used one in Sainsbury the other day, very useful...it saves you queuing up for hours over some silly items!

The ones in stafford tesco are either broken down or have a fit when you use them.

TBH its easier and probably quicker to use a normal check out

At the Tesco here there is usually 2 members of staff manning 4 of the checkouts.
You can sometimes beep through an item and put another one on top as it goes down the belt. Combinations of light and heavy do the trick.
Try a pack of mine beef or 4 pack of beer, and put your snacks on top.
This is better if two of you are doing it.

Can's can be rolled down the belt at the same time as other items.

We only got our blue bin like 4 weeks ago so you aren't that far behind...

As for the self service things, before i got the bike i used to goto tescos and use them daily as there was never a queue as all the old people/women who were too stupid to use the most basic thing in the world didn't go to them cause they were worried that it would take ages... Rolling Eyes now that i've got the bike i goto the petrol station to get my lunch as it's quicker and means i don't have to walk as far Razz .

Got them in my Tesco near work.

They are OK if you hve items that dont need to be weighed, or things like bagels from the bakery as you have to find the code yourself and the pictures and descriptions thy give you are crap. If you ask for assistance the staff treat you like an idiot.

Pro - Sometimes quicker.

Cons - Things are no less expensive, you pack your own bag, You normally end up feeling like taking a baseball bat to it!
