Hi, i am just wondering. When i am 16 and get a provisional license i can get a 50cc and keep it restricted to 30moh? Also can i get a provisonal car lisence at 16 as long as i am accompanied by an adult in the car at the same time.? I am from Northern Ireland. I would appreciate any replies.

The Law in England is at 16 you can ride a moped that has a maximum speed of 30mph, provided that you have a provisional licence and have undertaken Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

As far as I know, you need to be 17 until you can drive a car with L Plates, your insured for the car, and you have an experienced driver in the car with you, such as a parent.

Thanks for the replies. I have mates in school who have derestricted there 50's and they do around 50mph or so. Do you reccomend this or would i get pulled for it. I would be scared of doing around 45-50 on a main road and the plice being behind me and realising. Also what would be a realistic price to spend on a fifty i only want it for the year until i am 17 and i wil move onto a 125. I wont want a really good one just one that will get me about.

I'll be the first to say that nobody gives a fuck about the 50kph restriction, and its dangerous, go unrestricted.

Don't think you have to do CBT in Northern Ireland.

Also there is no DAS, so when you pass your test its 2 years at 33bhp.

Same in the Republic.

My stepson got pulled at 43mph on his MBX50 and when they found out he was only 16 they threatened to nick him for no lisence if they caught him again.

If I recall correctly a moped has a "maximum design speed" of 30mph. Quite how you interpret this I don't know, but you could argue that it was still designed to do just 30mph except that you had modified it. Is modifying the final product the same as modifying the maximum design speed? I would say not. It was still only originally designed to go 30mph.

I was referring to the legal definition of a moped in this country. Sorry for any confusion.

What is a moped?
A moped is a motorcycle that has the following features:

maximum design speed not exceeding 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) (about 31 miles per hour (mph)
an engine capacity no greater than 50 cc
it can be moved by pedals, if the moped was first used before 1 September 1977
