I'll be emmigrating to Sweden in the next few months, and will be taking the bike over on the ferry...

Or are they much of a muchness?

Cheers

I have a Frank Thomas 'AQUA' pack which is 100% faultless, also a pair of Regatta bottoms from the Army & Navy store.

By far the best idea though was my 'Hein Gericke' Master suit which was damned expensive yet faultless. Not worn it for a while as i'm too fat for it Embarassed

The 'regatta' pants gave me an idea... I've just been rooting in the garage, and checking in my golf bag (which I've only used once this year), there's a pair of craghopper pants!! Almost forgot about them. Just checked and they fit well... So pants sorted... My golf jacket fits over too, but looks a bit erm hmm, not right...So just a jacket needed... I'm sure I have a raincoat somewhere...

I've got this jacket, which is a totally waterproof hi-viz jacket (did six hours in France in pouring rain and the top remained dry). Might as well go for a hi-viz jacket when it's raining, as the visibility is impaired anyway. I found that most waterproof stuff is black, which is not ideal.

You'll look a lot worse lying on a mortuary slab because somebody didn't see you in the dark when it was pissing down.

no such thing , cheap ones will only work up to 40mph , goretex will work up to 70mph , but the water still hangs inside but does not get to your skin,

rain is pretty easy to keep out but add in the factor of speed and water gets forced into the tiny pores , I've a rain jacket , fine in the city , crap at speed ,

on that note got anything you don't want?

if you are having something to go over leathers, it doesnt need to be breathable, so cagoul from a camping shop will be fine

its your upper body that gets wets, so im not even sure if waterproof trousers are necessary, but you can get those too

remember you want the rubbery completely waterproof ones not breathable ones

nice n cheap

I got a Hein Gericke oversuit (the basic one) which seems pretty good....not tried it in a downpour, only showers, but seems OK. I can't comment on what it would be like to wear for a whole day in a monsoon, but for £30 it seems fairly reasonable (plus it fits over the leathers which gives you more protection).

Army surplus goretex. Had my last set of dutch army issue overtrousers for seven years with never a leak. Replaced them with a bigger pair that fit over my leathers. £25 is the going rate.

'Itchy' you mad man

Are you telling me now that my cheap waterproofs have been leaking all these years Shocked I wish i'd known that, maybe, just maybe my gear should have been £500 instead of £60

My jacket has never let a drop in, the kecks have never leaked either and i don't ride at 40 mph in the rain like a girl. Mr. Green

I'll second that; got mine for less than a tenner in a camping store and they haven't leaked at all.

Have a look at Ride Recommended if you're after something more "designed for purpose" https://www.ridetriangles.com/nav?page=ridetriangles.contentspage&view_resource=5431134

The cheap woven stuff has a low hydrostatic head, which is leaky. The even cheaper non-breathable rubbery stuff is waterproof enough to make a dinghy out of, and will cope with pretty much anything Thumbs Up

That's the difference.

By the way, all fabrics should let water vapour through, so if your jacket gets soggy on the outside and you hand it up, it'll be soggy on the inside by the time you clock off. Find a radiator and chuck it on there Thumbs Up

Pro boots. None of this namby pamby bike crap I work for a living and expect my gear to last years of everyday use.

Racer Textile trousers. Had them year and a half and no problems except they are so warm I never use the lining and to warm for summer use.

Huge bering 3/4 coat.

Joe rocket leather gloves.

Alpinstars textile waterproof gloves for when its real wet but again way to hot for the moment and not really needed with the items below.

Huge bar muffs.

Adjustable heated grips.

Huge screen.

The last 3 bits make a HUGE difference in the cold wet weather.

I have a frank thomas Aqua jacket

It's waterproof..mostly. The seems are faultless but the end of the sleeve/cuff isnt water proof, so when staitonary water runs down your arms, into your gloves and gets soaked up by the absorbent area, the water then spreads up the inside of the jacket. Rolling Eyes

I've had both RST water proof torusers and Spada ones, both have failed at keeping water out, particularily prone to fail when you return to a wet bike with a wet seat.

I have two sets of leather trousers, tend to just get wet legs and swap the leathers over as and when.

The man speaks soothly. A set of handlebar muffs is the single best investment you can make for winter riding. Granted, two 5 litre squash bottles gaffa taped to the bars with the requisite holes cut in it (make sure it's ver.2, with the drainage holes...) does at a pinch, but a decent set of insulated jobbies makes a world of difference on a long run, particularly with rain and wind.
