Do you leave your computer on all the time or do you switch it off when u go to bed?
I heard someone left theirs on and the fan burnt out. so i always knock it off before I go to bed.

I want to run de frag thingie tonight so is it ok to leave it run while I`m in bed?
I don`t want to have to be climbing out the window at 2 in the morning cos the house has caught fire Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Laughing Laughing

Ours is permanently on. It used to act as our answering machine, so it was always left on.

Cheers,

Byrnie.

What sort of power consumption are you looking at for a PC? Recent elecy bill was higher than normal and the PC has been on a fair amount more.

I know that i've got a 350W PSU. Does that mean it always draws 350W worth, or does it vary on demand?

If your PC is just 'on' but not doing much, chances are even if the fan failed it wouldnt do much harm. But then the newer processor are a lot more fussy!

If its got a decent BIOS it'll be set to shut off if it does get too warm, so not much to worry about.

If you're doing a defrag, make sure you've turned off screen savers and hibernate/power save modes. Defrag doesn't like it when the screen saver kicks in.

He means do you have it set to go to sleep after a certain time ?

In control panel / power options make sure the the settings for power saving are set to "never".

Think it would vary on demand. Stuff like the hard disk and DVD drive would draw a fair amount, so in sleep mode I suspect it would be a fair amount below 350w. Say 200w, for 24 hours a day and 91 days in a quarter is ~450 units, say 10p a unit. On that basis it would add £45 to your electric bill.

All the best

At home, mine was usually on for up to 6 months at a time, usually around a month or so I'd switch it off and give it a few hours break. At uni, I'm keeping both on permanently, I'm getting my money's worth! Laughing

I turn it off , mainly cus I do everything I want to do and won't touch it till roughly 23 hours later, the computers at work are on all the time though,

not a climate change issue just a waste issue , in that wasting stuff for no real gain is kinda pointless , which is why I like note books the hibernate mode which allows you to go back into windows in about 5 seconds is a good compromise.

My media center PC stays on 24/7 and only reboots for updates. I turn off the surround sound system and tv/monitor tho.

my dev server is on 24/7 and hasn't been rebooted since it was built in January. it lives in the cupboard under the stairs, but will be moving to the server rack in my garage soon.

It is probably cheaper in the long run to keep your PC on at all times as whenever you turn something that heats up off and on, parts get damaged. Like when you turn your bike engine on, the first 10 minutes are the most damaging time for the engine. The same applies for PC Components, switching them on and off can cause more wear and tear than if it was just left on.

Depends if you would have just scraped the components when upgrading before they get to that point.

Main things that seem to fail with PCs is cooling fans which get clogged up with dust.

All the best

Even if your HSF did fail it wouldn't catch fire.

What you want to worry about is your PSU exploding! Lots of pretty blue smoke.
The motherboard caps blowing and spraying that yellow gunk all over the place is an interesting one, too..

My desktop has a huff and starts bleeping when it's cpu gets too hot, and then if i ignore that it shuts its self off at 98 degrees i think. My BIOS also has a fan failiure warning built in. I expect yours probably does too.My desktop is OLD!

My work PC caught fire once and started sparking. Luckily while I was there to switch off.

My 3rd newest of the 5 pc's i have at home started making a noise which I can only describe as cacophonous. It was during the day, this summer... The fan had decided that enough was enough and could you please give me a bastard break ffs.

I would turn off, unless downloading a torrent or something. It's environmentally friendly to turn off anyway.

Also, unless you have surge protection (I blew up a £300 amp like this), it's feckin dumb to leave things on in case of thunder storms...

Mine tends to be on from about 4-6pm - 12pm, then I always turn it off every night unless say downloading a film.

My pc hasn't been switched off since the 2nd of january, except for the 2 weeks i've been on holiday (well 1 1 week holiday i forgot to turn it off)

So its been on for the past 9 month bar 1 week.

But the PC i had before that had probably been on for about 2 years solid Shocked

Bearing in mind the odd power cut etc....

As previously said, unless you got a program running that requires high processing power, HDD running at full tilt etc then i wouldn't worry about it. and defrag doesn't suck anything out of your PC so youw ill barely notice it running Smile
