Take my lid off before fuel?! WTF!

I allways thought taking off your lid to pay is just manners.
Ive never had a problem with my usual station, as I allways fill up with my lid on then take it off when I go to pay.

I really dont see the point in getting worked up over an extra minute of your time.

never been asked myself to remove helmet, if i was then i would.

common courtesy costs nothing. throwing tantrums will only lead to us getting a worse tag associated.

if you regularly use a station then now and again take your lid off and let them see your face. do this a couple of times and they will get to recognise you in the gear and the bike. this way they know who you are and will not have a problem with it.

how hard is that.....

there are probably a few reasons why they ask for lids to be removed,
1, is age if a cashier sells fuel to an under 16 its her who gets the fine not the owner
2, drive offs ( nothing like a good rolikking from your boss after a drive off )
3, the ladies wanna check out the local talent !! and see if the boat race matches the package in the leathers.

To solve this you could always go in an pay first each til and pump operation has the ability to pre authorise a set amount of fuel ..
and a quick explanation if i take my lid off its gonna take me 10 minutes to sort out my headphones etc.

Personally I take mine off give my hair folicles a chance to breath.

Well, sorry to drag up this oldie but I just had to mention the "new rules" of our local Sainsburys petrol station today, more of a rant really.
Popped in this morning on the way to work, did my usual fill up and walk in to pay only to be asked by the cashier that next time could I remove my helmet! WTF! Up til now they have been biker friendly station. I said that yes I could but I will stand there and do it and went on to say that its ok to wear a hoody and a baseball cap but I have to waste everyones time in having to remove my helmet. She never replied simply took my money and I went.
At this station there is a side hatch so why not if it saves time and saves me from removing lid etc then having to put it back on again can they not allow us to pay via this hatch, after all it was put in but never ever used
Lets face it, if I were gonna do a runner then why on earth would I stand in the que for ten minutes to pay! If I were a muslim or rag head then whats the difference, just seems silly to me and is such time wasting task.

TBH when I'm on the bike I tend to avoid stations where you can't pay at the pump.
I usually go to one of the local Tesco or Asda so that I can fill up still sat on the bike, kitted up, pay with a card then ride off

Most of my local stations are cool. Apart from the Sainsbury's where you have to remove your lid for CCTV.

TBH you may not be queuing up to pay for fuel, you may draw a gun and hold up the station for money. I think it's about that as well as ride away's.

They let me fill up with my lid on though.

My local Shell people were mystified as to why a biker would be requested to remove the helmet, they just didn't get it at all.

We in Chelsea & Fulham not only fill up with our helmets on while sitting on our bikes, but we then ride our bikes to the side of the petrol station, where we leave them to go in and pay, leaving the pump free for the next customer.

there is one on the island, tescos is a pay at the pump one. well known card theif testing ground, go in on a bike keep your lid on can test if the card works without beeing identified by the cameras or needing the pin/or having to sign anything, very naughty and an obvious loophole. they should be done away with for this reason in my opinion. just take your lid off and go in and pay like everyone else incidentally i got asked to remove my helmet to pay in sainsburys the other day, the poor woman asking me looked terrified i was gona give her a load of abuse apparently a few bikers had done the helmet off policy on the isle of wight is actually a request of the local police not the fuel stations themselves id imagine its the same elsewhere

FFS! This argument again!? Just take it off out of courtesy, there's no point being an awkward bastard about it. It's only polite to not make the attendant speak to a fibreglass ball, and instead allow them to see your face. If you use the same station long enough, they'll eventually let you keep your lid on.

The thing is most of them do know me as I have always gone in there. Its just the time it wastes, after all our local Sainsburys is already under scrutiny for having customers go in and buy most of their wkly shop creating more ques, one woman the other wk I am told had over £40 worth of groceries and hadnt even brought fuel, the que was almost out the door with angry fuel fillers waiting to pay and get out, the main shop is only on the other side of the road so why didnt she go in there. I think that caused a bit of a stir by all accounts.

Update this mornin from Nick who went in to get fuel is that the he was told by cashier in there that there has been a lot of angry bikers going in, not removing helmets. The side hatch that I mentioned before that is never used has been suggested but they are worried that it will upset drivers as they say we will be pushing in! If there are plenty of cashiers there wont be this problem surely Nick went on to say, it was all a pleasent conversation he said, that surely if he was gonna rob the place he would go at a quiet time, not park in full view of the cctv but round the side and simply run in unexpected. The cashier was apologetic he said and carried on to say that it is like Bullet says the idea of the police and that they are simply doing what the bosses have told them, still shite mind. And all this at the same time as the Jack Straw comments, bet they can go in and get fuel wrapped up to the eyeballs

I'm still puzzled by what possible difference a notice on the door requesting that you take your helmet off will make. Anyone who's going to rob the garage isn't going to take their helmet off anyway. Everyone else is just being asked to go through the motions for the sake of it.

I very rarely take my helmet off in a petrol station, and then only if I am actually browsing in the garage or if I feel like it anyway; I have never actually been asked to remove it, nor refused fuel. I always check I've got my wallet before I fill up, in plain view of the cashier, so it's obvious that I have the intention and the means to pay.

If you're using pay at pump, you can get £60 of fuel without any checks on whose card you're using too. No signature, no pin number, no anything. A bit like the self service tills, no payment security whatsoever.

Most petrol stations have a roof, so how will your glasses get wet? it takes about 2 secs to remove a helmet and probs 10 secs as you walk out of the kiost to put it back on again.

I really cant see why there is a problem, ive been riding for about 5 years now, 12 months a year, all weathers, and i always remove my helmet out of courtesy.

Because win blows the rain. Because water falls off your helmet onto your glasses / into the visor when you move it around.

It takes far more than 2 seconds. By the time glasses are put back comfortably, ear plugs in place, hair not dragged out, gloves back on, etc, you can easily add a couple of minutes.

Feel free to continue to take your lid off, and I will continue to be courteious to those waiting by getting gone as quickly as possible. Personally I think it is selfish to faff around and delay others.

As I work in a Petrol Station I can say that Keith has got it right, getting in and out as quickly as possible is the best way! Nobody wants to spend all day in a Petrol Station!

So with that I don't take my lid off, I take my gloves off but that's just to make it easier to take cards out of my wallet.

Even when I'm putting my gloves on and somebody is waiting I feel bad for making them wait. Never mind having to put my lid on etc.

Personally, if I worked at a petrol station, I couldn't give a crap whether people were particularly polite or not, as long as they're not rude. In fact, in bar work I find overly friendly people annoying, because they get in the way jabbering on and on.

However, I would care that people were trying to fill up and pay with their helmets on, if the station policy said otherwise. I wouldn't want to lose my job because I didn't want to stand up to Joe GSXR. If the station/company didn't have a policy of bikers removing their helmets, they can do it till the cows come home, I know why they're doing it.
