Finaly got my report out:

The MMRA were at the Sunderland Circuit of Warden Law for the 6th round of the British Minimoto Racing Association championships last weekend.

Love them or hate them - MiniMotos cannot be ignored in the world of motorcycle racing. Here lies the introduction and proving ground for our next world class racers. Many of today’s youngsters racing in the Aprillia Superteens Championships and various other Junior big bike championships came from a Minimoto racing background. These kids are the future of British Motorcycle racing.
The British Minimoto Championship harnesses and brings together competitors ranging from 6 years to 60, split into a number of categories to allow safe competitive racing for all age groups across the UK

I visited Warden Law circuit at the Karting North East Centre for round 6, to see what it was all about. I was very surprised to see how organised it was, bikes were kitted out with transponders, and scrutinised. All riders were wearing proper race suits, where they get those tiny race suits from I will never know! There was practise sessions and qualifying on Sunday, and the main racing was on the Bank Holiday Monday. The circuit was marshalled well, and any incidents were quickly mopped up and the sessions moved along quickly. Race control was busy, but they seemed to be keeping everything in order and keeping the information up to date well, getting results out etc, All volunteers.

I was very impressed by the maturity and attitude of the riders. Not a hoody in site, and it’s a shame that there are people out in the country giving these vehicles a bad name, on the race track they are very good fun and as safe as any motor sport can be. It was good to see the parents out racing in the classes as well, although there were also many nervous parents on the pit wall.

“It was my sons second race ,I never knew I was going to be so nervous” Said parent and rider Jon Carver, who was resigned to the pit wall to watch his son Ryan after an injury has put him out of both production and sidecar rounds.

Brothers Luke & Danny Hedger were out racing together for the first time, while a nervous mum watched:

Then there are the sidecars! This section of the MMRA looks to be a bit more ‘senior’ generally running 80cc 2 strokes or 125 4 stroke engines. It was very surprising to see the kind of speeds they could get out of them, and I cover lots of F1/F2 Sidecar action with BMCRC/MRO, the amount of hanging off these guys did from tiny chassis sidecars was mad.

I spoke to Charlotte who was a passenger for only the second time on Chris Bell’s #155 4T machine, and she said
“It’s not the hang off that’s difficult, it’s getting back on again”
Clearly it was getting tiring as she decided to leap off in front of me on Sunday afternoon!

Race day was interesting as the weather changed from glorious sunshine to random rain fall!

With all the different machinery and ages out there it was interesting to see that the fastest Race lap of 1.02.14 (on a much bigger ‘Super’ bike) was only 6 seconds faster than Bradley Ray in the Junior Lights on approx 4Hp bike.

Several spills and slides were to be seen and some very close battles, Bradley Ray #28 continued to dominate the Junior Lights with a 96 point lead over 2nd place Luke Hedger and is now leading the Junior Production class due to the lack of Niall Waddell and Harry Cousins and some great racing. Luke Helm in the Junior Cadets collected another 86 points to open his lead to 123 points.

In the Senior Production class Chris Martin leads the table after collecting 86 pints to have a 142 point lead. Mark Scholefield is clearly away on his own in the 4.2 Senior after collecting 100 points due to lack of competitors, Consistency is key, and Mark has entered every round and there is no way anyone can catch him now.

Max Wadsworth and Christian Peck are battling closely for the Metrakit 70cc title, the lead is currently Max’s with Christian chasing by 11 points. The lead is also close in the Metrakit 50cc’s Jason Douglas is currently holding onto 1st position.

Sidecar results saw Gorden Martlew/Phil Mapplebeck #128 took the lead in the F1 Sidecars with a perfect 100 points in their “Timebomb Racing” car, but Tamzine Hanks/Stefan Castille want the lead back!

F2 Sidecars was won by Mick Williams/Sue Morrell, and the 4T saw Mark & Mike Leigh #44 take 95 points, putting them 2nd in the championship on 48 points behind Richard Guest/Marc Coyles.

The Supers Races were very close and points were well spread, Luke Holness managed to take his first points grabbing 90 of them, finally in the Lightweight Production class Andy Yelland is holding a healthy lead in the championship after taking 95 points to extend his lead to 136 points from Philip Scott.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the weekends racing, and I would definitely recommend anyone in the Northants area should go and watch at Wilton Mill circuit in Daventry on 16/17 September, take the kids, they will all want a bike by the end of the day.

My 7yr old Son and 6yr old Niece wanted a sidecar by the end of the day, but couldn’t decide who was going to drive and who would passenger!

Thanks To Marci at MMRA https://www.MMRA.org.uk
