riding home this afternoon, through stamford hill, which to those who dont know, is an area of north london where the community is predominately orthodox jewish.

anyway, im on the 675, growling along at about 50mph in second (30 limit, tut tut) and im approacing a group of 6 or 8 young orthodox jewish school boys who are walking towards me on the opposite pavement, all about 8 or 9, sporting the typical heavy knitted school jumpers, shaved heads, scull caps and ringlets of long hair down from their temples. as i pass them the boy at the back breaks into a huge grin and gives me a big thumbs up, just like any kid of his age, so i wave back.

then i think of him going home and telling his mum and dad how he wants to ride a sportsbike when he grows up. now this might just be my ignorance showing through, but i cant see it going down well somehow. you donts see many (any!) orthodox jewish motorcyclists........

whatever, the point of this is it reminded me of the fact that we are all born the same, but as adults we set up boundaries and barriers for our kids, and in doing so take away some of their natural humanity.

Something that always sticks in my mind is the time when i pulled up behind a car at some traffice lights, leather jacket, tinted visor down e.t.c

Kid in the car in front, couldn't be more than junior school age i doubt, turns round, shits himself not expecting a biker there then starts waving at me... and a big grin on his face when i wave back made my day ...

Similar story as when I was happily riding through a 'cheaper' side of town when a guy in a gang who was wearing: Doc Martins, Stay-Press troos and a Crombie with a shaved head and an earing in one of his lugs, lobbed a 1/2 brick at me.
