Me and my GF are going to Dubai for a few nights and then onto Tokyo for 4 nights in Jan, i would like to spend more time in Japan and take my time to see everything but funds are tight and so is my allowed time off work so. what is Japan like in January? some folk have said that certain times of year its not all that great for visitors and i hope January isn't one of those times. I'm expecting a huge difference with the culture compared to here in the UK but is their anything that might come as a shock?
anyone on here been to Japan?

cheers

the biggest difference you might find is the respect, and ettiquette that is shown. Bowing to you as you enter a shop, bowing as you leave, and in some cases, walking around the counter to hand you your purchases, as it would be rude to expect you to reach over the counter.

it's less formal in the cities like tokyo, than in smaller, more provincial towns, but still a damn-sight better than the UK.

Crime rates are much lower in general, as the police have so much respect that peope would expect to be caught, so don't bother committing crime.

I'm basing this info on a combination of my own research into the country, as I'd love to go there, and my dad's experiences as he was there for a few weeks as part of an ISO standards meeting.

I went in march and it was in the stages of going from very cold to very warm on a daily basis. Tokyo is amazing - you will have an outstanding time. Make sure you see the Cos play wierdo's on Harajuko bridge its brilliant!

If you want a guide book, i can lend you my one, its the lonely planet version, as the rough guide i had before was shite! (completely ignores alot of landmarks and sights) Bought the lonely planet off a canadian who was leaving the country, even though i think by on large rough guide is a better book for other countries..

Im at work now, but i will look through my travel diary to help me remember what amazing things i did and list them for you. I was in japan for 8 weeks though - which was still nowhere near enough!

Envious, as i want to go back,

I'd love to go, but the well-respected Japanese police would be picking me up within minutes, due to my insatiable lust for oriental cuties.

I havent yet been, but I will. However did meet a heck of a lot of Japanese backpackers, and found them to be the most courteous, friendly, sweet people. Just be polite and smile and courteous in return, it should get you respect. Try and learn a couple of greetings.

I think the weather will be cold in January...best check on the internet - you've obviously got access...

Yeah, when I went around that time in January it was cold and wet a lot and everyone was bowing at me haha.

They're very polite and seem willing to help out even though all I wanted was some more hash browns for god's sake.

Oh and you don't put milk into lemon tea. Brick Wall

I would advise against Roppongi.

It is the place where all the bloody squaddie/coke head lawer types end up and is full of hookers being pimped by huge black men.
Everything is over priced and its just......well shit actually.
I went there a few times and hated it every time as the people are so false, they dont like you they just want your money.

The Roppongi Hills development during the day is nice though.

Shibuya on the other hand is very young, full of beautiful japanese and alot cooler. (its where you will find the massive crossing seen in lost in Translation btw). I had many decent nights out and can highly reccomend a club named Xanadu. We befriended the landlady and she plied us with free drinks Very Happy
I reccomend going to the many Karaoke bars, they are a riot. You pay about 10 quid for to hire a private room for roughly 2 hours and you can have as much alcohol as you can drink in that time whiklst making tits out of yourselves lol - brilliant for getting ready for a night out!

If you are only in Tokyo for a short time avoid Roppongi - its full of westerners and you could go to a place like that anytime anywhere. Also stay away from the GasPanic clubs - they are rubbish too Unless you like gangsta rap and "Ho's" that is!

Although at the end of the day, it for you to decide and experience yourself if it takes your fancy.

Eh? First I've ever heard of those. Confused

Really? I'm surprised. Japanese 'racism' is well-known; the EU lot bitch at them about it all the time (though this isn't particularly surprising).

Plenty of places that refuse entry to non-japanese, although I expect most of that occurs out in the sticks.

Yeh, did notice one bar had a japanese only sign... i saw a grand total of 1 black person in the entire month, and only a few westerners.. thing with the koreans is they hate the japanese FAR more Laughing (perhaps the constant invasion from japan going back a few thousand years, a bit like the france/england thing but worse)

nearly ended up with some trouble while in a bar on account of a mates tatoos (and also was at the time european kung-fu champion, so enjoyed a good scrap) actually very much the japanese style now i think of it.. at the muffled shrieks of "BAD MEN!" from his japanese mate we decided to move to another establishment..

Not actually sure where we ended up going all together, really want to go again very hard but its preeety expensive.. i do threaten to visit friends every so often Razz

I think the korean hatred may be to do with the huge massacres during WW2, similar to the Nanjing Massacres in China.( ~60,000 dead)
The japanese dont talk about it, but the Koreans and Chinese have not forgiven them.

Of course th communist governemnts dont mention that t6hey locked their citizens outside the city and left them to die.....
