I came home from work to find a drunk skinhead in a tracksuit in my garden. He was calling out to an imaginary friend called Mick. At first I thought he'd get bored and find his way out. Instead he knocked on the window so a bit concerned, I opened the patio door to talk to him. He started talking nonsense and i recognised him just before he made a half hearted attempt to push his way in.

I had met him before when he was sober or high rather than drunk. I think it was about 4 months ago. He had been very chatty and friendly and pleasant, and another time a friend said that he knew him and they chatted. My friend then told me that this guy used to be a smack head but was alright unlike other thugs on that estate they had both lived on.

Bearing in mind that this nutter is deep down 'alright' if a bit fucked up, i felt ok standing up to him a bit, and then sitting with him in the garden to have a chat with him.

It seems that he lives with his sister who is my neighbour at th back, and she had suggested he ask if he could live with me. I guess she wants to chuck him out.

I did feel a bit sorry for him, hes just out of prison and i think he came back to stay with her and maybe shes not letting him in or something.

But then he was also a bit odd and threatening so although i didnt quite believe his threats, i asked him to leave. I thought i could chat with him a bit until he felt like leaving but I wasnt comfortable and he didnt want to leave.

I went in and called the police and he heard and sloped off so i cancelled the call as they were still on the phone.

I then secured the back gate so he couldnt get in again. I noticed a bag in the alley, and had a glance in and saw opened envelopes with the address J ward Winson Green prison, so i think he has just come out.

A few minutes later he came back and tried to get in but couldnt and shouted "yo" for a bit.

Id quite like to help him as when hes ok hes a nice bloke even if a bit fucked up.

So this thread is for fuck thats wierd, but also if anyone has anyone has any ideas on what to do to help the guy, pls say.

Wdnt like to think of him sleeping rough and becoming a tramp, or worse pestering me on a regular basis.

I wouldnt mind if he wasnt drunkenly trying to take ownership of my house. This consisted of him declaring it was his house not mine, and later when he was feeling devious, him suggesting i go to the gate at the top of the garden (so he could get past me into the house through the patio door)

I might knock on my back door neighbours door in a bit and have a chat with her about it.

Dont really wanna approach him again while hes still a bit odd.
Seems a shame because he was quite good to chat to when not drunk. We had a decent chat about motorbikes, and matt tells me that this guy used to fix his bicycle for him when they were on the same estate.

While pissed today he said he was a mechanic. Ive no idea if its true.

Its a shame when ppl fuck up their lives by bad choices and getting in bad situations.

If you start to try and give him help personally then he won't leave you alone. For your own safety you should probably try and keep him away, let him move on to somewhere else.

yeah you are probably right
hopefully his sister hasnt kicked him out yet and he was just trying his luck

i used to work with a guy who once gave a big sob story as if he really needed to moveout as he was being kicked out by his parents, and asked if he could come stay with me and my mum (this was b4 i got a house)

he couldnt obviously, but i was a bit concerned until i happened to get talking to his gf, who said ignore him its not that bad, hes just a bit of a nutter

ahh, i get u now. no im not thinking of having him come live with me
just maybe helping him get a place in a hostel or something

i'll probably just leave him to it tho

i dont think hitting him would have helped much would just have made it worse.

Its hard to explain, but he wasnt hyper and aggressive, he just thought i could help, and then wanted to take charge and tell me he was the boss. The threats would have sounded a bit more convincing if I thought he meant them but they seemed more for effect and and to get respect or something. I just wasnt sure he wouldnt flip if he got a bit upset or something.

He was trying to be the man as if i would just do what he said, but just seemed a bit stubborn and disappointed when i didnt.

not quite sure its as serious as that, but i guess it might be, so i shd look after number one.

putting the latch on the gate had him foxed tho so i think im safe for the moment.

a bit of a shove would have it open but he didnt try it

hes more pathetic than a threat really, the way he was today anyway

does make me think i shd move into a nicer area tho

cheapest house in town for a reason maybe Smile

i once met a policeman who was friends of some friends, he told me about being on the beat, and him being chatty and nice to a drunk one night. the following night, the drunk wanted to chat again thinking he had found a friend. the policeman repeatedly told him to go away before hitting him and putting him in the cells for the night

i thought that was well out of order as he wouldnt treat a lonely old lady who wanted to chat like that.

difference is, this guy has tried to get into my house, has made vague threats, and although he seems harmless, he may not be. im not about to hit him or stab him tho, think id have a feud if i did (I am not killing a guy for drunkenly walking into my garden)

I can't say I've ever stabbed someone, or ever felt the need, but I'd broadly agree with the rest of the above.

Prisons these days provide huge amounts of assistance with resettlement and a place to live - even if only for a short time. He would have to have served a very mickey-mouse sentence to not have been eligible for that kind of assistance.

Whether or not he was sincere in his requests, it looks like there would be an enormous risk of him betraying your trust at the first opportunity - especially based on his behaviour today.

my friend who knows him happened to just drop by to show off his new thundercat, and while we were chatting about his bike and this bloke, the kid from the house where the blokes sister lives came over.

apparently the bloke has been sleeping rough for a while nearby for a while. the sister gave him money to get a flat but he just spent it on booze

but his clothes didnt look dirty so im not convinced he was sleeping out

the kid said he collapsed up the road and the police and ambulance had him for a bit

Ask yourself this - why did his sister not let him come in after a spell in prison? What was he in prison for? Drugs, ABH, GBH, assault? He's coming across as a person with a serious mental problem. Stay well away from him, if he approaches you again - call the police who'll get him sectioned.

He's a bottom feeder. A parasite, who will suck all your life blood out with his bleeding-heart stories about the fucked-upness of his life.

I bet none of its ever his fault, either, is it?

When he comes across with questions like "Can I come and live with you?" ... or "Have you got a fiver, mate?"... the answer is "Nah, mate."

Nothing less. Nothing more.

This says to him "I've called you 'mate', so I am prepared to engage you in passing conversation when you are being lucid and interesting" ... but it also says "I feel no need to explain myself or my decisions to not let you into my life on a more regular basis."

If he tries "But why not?"
Just say "Cos I ain't."

Do as HK suggests, dont get yourself drawn in. If you do want to help the fella get in touch with your local YMCA or homeless organisation - get a leaflet, or get a community warden phone number, so next time he comes by you can give them a call - they will then engage with him and take him off your hands.

If he comes back again, give him said leaflet, say Ive spoken to these people, these are who you should contact. They'll get you off the street and give you some food, they are there to help.

Dont let him into your premises, if he comes in again, be friendly but firm and get him away.

Dont engage into deep conversations, think about the risk factor. Your safety...

Even just this much: Does this not tell you something?

They never do.

Why bother? You'll only get in deeper if you go round there, trying to sort out their family's problems.

If those don't work, then the following key words should be contemplated:

Dark
Alleyway
Balaclava
Hob nail boots
Large stick

Stay well away, mate. The more you get yourself involved, the more difficult you'll make things for yourself.

I have 1st hand experience of dealing with someone involved in drink and drugs, and if I had the choice I'd never have got involved.

"Polite
Firm
Unsympathetic
Disinterested"

....sounds good advice to me Thumbs Up
