Road safety

I am in the third year of my degree in engineering product design and have to write my dissertation. I have chosen to write it on road safety and therefore are on the look out for journal articles or research in the area of road safety and the contributing factors to accidents and any measures being taken to reduce road accidents. Any research or articles would be a great help, so can anyone point me in the right direction to find such research

Yeah thats good thanks, am looking for what measures have been taken ie speed cameras to reduce accidents and research on how affective they have been also how the uk measures up to the rest of europe in road safety stats

any help would be great thanks

Remember - as a wise old engineering lecturere told me -

'Statistics are like a bikini ........ what they show is important, but what they hide is vital!'

It would be be interesting to take a set of figures and see how you could skew the results to suit various conclusions!

Hi

Trouble with the stats is that they are compiled by people with an agenda. If government statistics do not match up with the current agenda being pushed by the government then they are ignored or hidden (or released on a day when something big has happened).

Have a good hunt round the DFT web site (although there is a lot less there now than there used to be). Also try Safe Speed and the ABD. In any case try and just use them as reference for the original stats and draw your own conclusions.

Am in my third year of a degree too so I empathise with you. Just starting dissertation also.
Do you have access to journal databases through uni portals?
Have you tried google scholar?
Do you have a research proposal yet?
If you go through the 'THINK' website you can find the ten year plan to improve road safety. (it's hidden in the journalist pages)
I am covering the new legislation for child seat retraints for a Health Promotion essay so if I see anything relevent I will give you a shout.
Are we but a pair of geeks?

As above, the journals in the library are the best way to go. They might take some digging to find what you need, but they're pretty good. My preference was for the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) papers.
