Hello,

Passed my test, getting rid of my TZR 125 and getting on my ZZ-R 250.

Rode it about 6 miles, and the back wheel lost all traction (very scary). Stopped the bike and oil smoke and dripping coming from the engine. I had changed the oil filter/oil (put 1.9l with new gasket for the sump) before riding. The oil is coming from the left side of the engine, but I can't see exactly where.

I've read that it could be a crankcase breather, I do not know where this is as I cannot find a manual, and its not in the ZZR supplement.
The bike came fitted with cone filters, so there is nowhere for the breather to go.

Any ideas where it is? Or what else could cause it?

Thanks,

Hi

At a guess the breather is on the top of the engine, towards the back.

On the left I would mainly be worried about damage to the crankcases near the front sprocket from a chain coming off.

All the best

Keith

Found the breather, replaced the hose with a small bit of hose as a temp replacement. That has now shown up 2 other leaks, one on each engine side casing. Changing those gaskets with some gasket sealer has solved those, but its still leaking! It now seems to be coming from the top of the engine... Could there be something that is blowing out all these gaskets? my local dealer will take a week to order a gasket so I don't want to change too many!

Thanks!

Hi

Blocked breather hose will increase crankcase pressure causing seals / gaskets to leak. Similarly overfilling with oil will have the same effect.

All the best

Should there be any pressure behind the oil filler cap? It feels like I'm opening a semi-flat bottle of coke (a little hiss noise and a little pressure, but nothing powerful enough to blow it out my hand)

Nope. Sounds like the breather is blocked.

All the best
