What size is your plate?

Getting a new plate made up as i dont like the one that came on the bike. Just wondered what size plate everyons has.

The one on there is 7 X 5, but its too small and imo its asking to be pulled.

My dads got an 8 X 6 which looks good. Its slightly smaller, but not taking the piss.

My old bike had a standard 9 X 7 on it and it was fooken huge

Im not gona get any slogans or pictures, just a black border around the outside. Where is best to get it made up?

8x6 - But it's only a six digit, so it doesn't have to be 9x7 to leagally fit in all the digits.

Been running 8x6's ever since i passed my test years ago with no issues, but i do put the 9x7 back on for MOT's.

6x5 and only been stopped for it being unreadable when covered in mud.

9X7, but i had to trim off the yellow bit around the edge so that the plate would fit between the top box mounting bars. Haven't cut into any of the letters and had no trouble from the cops (yet).

it stupidly large though. 8x6 would be much better

Pretty small , only been stopped once (although the bike doesn't get used much so that prolly helps)

9x7 already on the bike, plus it's due an MOT at the end of the month, so it'll stay on there for now.

I'm planning to get an 8x6 with the Welsh flag logo on it after the MOT, even though I think the 7x5 would look better. However with the 7x5 being noticeably smaller, it would probably attract some unwanted plod attention.

I was talking to a fellow rider at work who knew I was getting a new plate and he gave me a copy of V796 (Display of Registration Marks) from the DVLA.

The stated rules are related to...
text size
font
text arrangement
reflective border size
euro symbol size

plus the British Standard mark, plate manufacturers name and postcode

Motorcycles are allowed to use a smaller text size than cars.

If these are the only rules, then minimum plate size is determined by the number of characters in the registration mark. A plate showing the registration mark '1VT' could be legally much smaller than one showing AB01 CDE, even if all text and border rules were adhered to.


I am not sure if number plate legality is part of an MOT test or not.

I keep a stock plate on my bike. Since I ride into central London every day, most roads I travel on are a 30-limit which means I'm regularly risking a speeding fine. It helps if the cops pull me and I'm not taking the piss with a dark visor/small plate. Aside from that, my brother-in-law got pulled on the M25 last year for loud cans on his Mille. The also found an under-sized plate and no rear reflector. The cop told him that because they found 3 faults they had to report him where if there were only 2 they would have given him a rectification and sent him on his way.

Right now, ive just got the standard plate on my bike. Really its just like the thought of upgrading my exhaust system, it will just attract un-needed attention to the bike. So far the bike looks completely standard, and in almost a year of riding ive never been pulled, even when doing some fairly illegal things past police cars/vans even a traffic persuit car today

Got a standard size show plate on mine with "H's Hornet" along the bottom where the dealers name normally is, got mine made up at Beaulieu for around £8 I think it was.
Dont think its necessary to change it back for the MOT but will check before she goes in, after all its pretty much standard
