Just started stripping back my zzr 600 to kill a little time until i can actually ride it.

this weekend thought taking the fairing off to give it a proper clean would be a good idea, not realising that a world of furry corroded engine bits awaited me!!

Now i could just stick the fairing back on and pretend i havent seen it but it looks a right mess, i reckon this bikes seen a few more outside winters than i realised and leaving its going to end up with an eventual expensive fix.

Anyway, does anyone know of a miracle preferably magic solution to corroded engine, i've dug out some muc off and good old autosol, any other thoughts before i have another go next weekend?

cheers

jo

toothbrush and sugar soap, sorry mate its the hard yards for you,
best be getting it sorted now rather than later though,
some one else might come up with some good ideas for making it quicker though.
good luck Very Happy

Ideally you'd get it shotblasted, but that would be quite involved..

How many miles has it got on the engine? i should point out they have a reputation for gears eating themselfs @40k so if its not had it delt with (or its getting close) i'd considering sorting it out, its not expensive (appart from gaskets, part is only 50p or something) but requires a full stripdown... (other than that there solid bikes, i'd like one myself)

Just depends how prepared you are to get stuck in Razz

Good luck Thumbs Up

Cheers for the advice so far

i've checked the mileage and it stands at 29000 at the mo', so a while to go until 40,000.

I am taking the opportunity to sort bits out, especially having now had a proper look at the radiator and oil cooler which although not leaking look to have had better days, seem to have taken the brunt of the non-cleaning and are very sorry and corroded.

anyone seen that film money pit? I'm starting to think that i've got the bike version!!! Just kidding, joking aside bike runs a treat, just need to sort the niggles on these few bits

cheers

take the furry parts, dump them in a pan of water and toss in a load of rubbarb, them boil the rubbarb, the acid in it will make em good as new

......thats a brilliant tip, my wife mentioned something similar to the lemon and vinegar, but would never have thought of boiling my bike in rhubarb!!!

Cheers for all the tips, next weekend will certainly be interesting if not productive!!!

take care

Add some rhubarb..sprinkle with some sugar...wrap in pastry and rev to 9000 rpm for 5 minutes. Wrecks your engine but tastes great..er...sorry.

I have had some good results with the stuff they sell for cleaning alloy wheels. It's all basically the same sort of approach. The acid desolves the aluminium oxide ( that white furry muck ) and leaves you with the alloy underneath. Make sure you clean it all off afterwards, and spare some thought for stopping it happening in the future!

......... Thanks for the thought, i guess it all is reliant on something slightly acidic and alot of rubbing.

I had hoped that either mr sheen or muscle would have come up with a handy low scrubbing solution!!! Ah well adds to the fun i guess

As an aside, does anyone know if zzr d and e series parts are interchangable? i think i need to change the radiator and oil cooler and have been offered reasonable used parts off a zzr d

roll on the weekend!!!
