Is your bike Slower with a Race Exhaust

Right - when i had my standard exhaust i saw 162 on the clock

with my scorpion exhaust (baffle in) i got to 158 and its basically out of puff

anyone else had race cans slow their bike down???

Test it with baffle out.

The baffles are notorious for messing up the fueling (one member here lost 30hp or so with it in, I believe!)

Has the bike been set up for the exhaust.

The baffle will screw up the power. Basically a bodge to quieten down a race can and quite possibly going to be worse than a stock road legal exhaust.

My Bandit is set up for the Akrapovic full system. On the same and dyno it made 144 without the baffle and 137 with the baffle.

no not set up - i dont wanna have to spend an arm and a leg on a power commander either!!!

i am thinking of trying a new air filter first, might have the original still in!!

i think its too loud with the baffle out - it kills me!!!

Err, get it set up.

Playing around without setting it up is (at best) like adding neons to a scooter. Changes the looks but does nothing useful. And at worst will wreck your engine.

I think that the 2003 R6 is fuel injected, therefore it would be a power commander, not re-jetting.

The reason your bike is slower (not that 4mph top end really matters and if you're doing that speed on the road, you might want to use that baffle for other purposes) is that your engine is designed to be used with the standard exhaust, not the loud can. By changing those over, you are effectively changing the way the engine breaths and probably letting it run a bit rich/lean, the bike will make the best power at 14.1 air to fuel ratio, you are effectively changing this.

Taking the baffle out will almost certainly make it run lean, which may actually make it a tad faster but only for a while until your plugs slowly melt and fur up.

The only way to get the best out of a loud can is to get a power commander and get the bike set-up properly on a dyno.

Whilst I think about it, where did you get the bandit jetted and set up, Keith? Just picked up a full Yoshi race system for the ZZR, going to be replacing the air filter anyway so I may as well get it set up properly.

no. I fitted a power commander with my can. I now have 109bhp from my 03 gsxr6 as well as a nice power curve and noise!

If you have a race can get a PC and have it set up professionally. Its worth it.

It was my bro who lost 30hp with a race exhaust, but then he got it dyno jetted and got them all back.

I sugest that you get it on the dyno and see what is going on because if the fuelling is out its not good for the engine etc. My brothers was running very lean!!

I got a blue flame and it says that you dont need to jet but it still messed up the bottom end, so i would get it jetted, it also makes it super smooth all the way to the redline!!

i dont know about outright speed but when i had a can on mine the power wasnt very smooth, i only noticed it was smoother standard after taking it for a mot,i havnt changed it back.

With the Bandit on the stock carbs jetted for the full system it really screws up the low down power running with the baffle in.

I played with my bike. Spent ~£50 on parts and £100 on dyno set up. The top line is after syno set up, the middle after just bolting parts on and the bottom is std.

Didn't they change the fuelling from carburetted to injected in 2002 or 2003? In that case you would have to check which yours is. If it's injected, a power commander usb would be best, if it's carbed, you'll need it re-jetting.
