Had my first break down on the bike the other day but I think that was partly my fault!
I’ve been having trouble with the throttle of my ZXR750 so decided to do some adjustment. I didn’t want to adjust it anymore at the throttle end so decided to get to the cables mounted onto the side of the carbs. No major problem as Mr Haynes guided me through it quite well, remove tank etc etc.
Run the bike in a garage to test the throttle response, all good, felt lovely. Put all the fairing back on and gave it a polish to remove any oily paw prints I had put on it. Put leathers on and decided to go out and actually test it (and it was a nice day as well). Took it nice and easy for a few miles on quiet back roads to make sure everything felt right. All felt smooth and much more responsive. Driving down to a round about and under braking, all of a sudden the bike starting running like shit, sounding like it was missing and all of a sudden, no throttle response and the engine trying to die when the throttle was turned! Pulled off into a quiet sideroad and parked up. Turning the throttle just stalled the bike. It ticked over fine, just nothing on the throttle.
Got the chocolate tools out of the back of the bike (never trust those tools you get with the bike, I wrung a spanner on the first nut I tried, could see the spanned opening up!) thought there must be a kinked pipe or something. No. A call to the missus to bring some proper tools out went wrong as I had locked the garage (the key is on the bike keys) and I locked the spare set of keys in the car the other day as the central locking was playing up!
Her father came out in the end and we poured over the bike and could find nothing wrong. Eventually after about an hour, it started and was running right again, no missing, throttle working A OK. Went for a run and it tried to “bog down” when I first pulled off then went off like a rocket and has been fine ever since.
All we could presume is that in moving the tank earlier, it had disturbed some sediment that lay in it and got sucked into the carbs so when they were open, it stalled. Anyone else got any ideas? Should the fuel filter need replacing (as it appears it didn’t work!)?
Respect to a house owner as well who came out after I had been revving the bike outside of his for a while (after I got it going again). I thought he was going to come and have a right old moan about the noise but said “I’ve got a trailer if you need to get it home mate” and “I meant to say you could use my drive if you wanted”. Nice to see there’s still good people out there! ____________________ Owner : ZXR750L3 ('96) My bike @ BikePics.com

I once managed to get water into the tank of my old VT. It then had vaguely similar problems to what you describe there. It was a pig to start and would bog down under any throttle and sometimes only fire on one cylinder. Every so often, it would clear it's throat and fly, just when I wasn't expecting it (having the throttle open wider than normal).
After about thirty miles or so it more or less just disappeared.
Whether it's rained on you or whether the tank tends to accumulate water is another matter of course. ____________________ I must not be a troll...
