earphones in and listening to music?

has any one ever done this? while on a long trips? a lot of people say you need to hear the engine to change gear. but you can just look at the rev counter. because if you are on a long trip along the motorway you will be in a single gear for a long while.

I used to while riding though london, but i found whatever music i was listining to affected my mood/riding. If it was HipHop or House or something fast i rode faster, if it was Reggae or the like i pootled along... Anyway its not for me whilst in london, but on a long trip maybe...

I listen to my pod everyday to work and back, and yeah I agree with TheDon, it can change you're riding if you're not careful,.......Celine Dionne makes me go on rampage and I ride up onto the pavement ploughing down grannies

I'm always listening to mine as i just get bored somtimes when riding somewhere, doesn't effect my concentration. But like above it does depend on the type of music for what mood you're in.

I use the ipod so they get uncomfatable after a while.

Yeah, I listen to my pod also on my 7 mile each way ride to work most days, and like others it does affect the way I ride. But no matter how loud, I always seem to hear the engine.

I usually listen to mine on my 45 mile commute, but like others have said, what you listen to definately effects the way you ride - System Of A Down on the way to work tonight was probably a bad idea
You can get 'bud' type earphones that sit very comfortably in the ear and also provide a certain amount of noise reduction as well.

It can make a ride much more enjoyable but don't have them too loud that you can't hear things around you - emergency vehicle sirens or other vehicles horns in particular

I always had trouble putting the lid on with the headphones in ear. got some of those other type that cover your ear completly, work better also. A must for a trip with any kind of mileage

Get a phone with an MP3 player, I like have. That way, you can listen to music, and if someone rings you whilst you're riding you can talk to them

If you want to do so, do it sensibly. Don't be like me and put metal on full blast down the motorway and realise there's a police cop behind you with its sirens on tailing you for the last minute or two.

Having it on full pelt especially to a tune you particularly like will cloud your senses from whats happening around you. Town is not a sensible place to shove your earphones on, but country roads where the right tune can help your mood and keep you more alert is.

Biking maybe interesting, but if you're going long distances alone, it's a comforting feeling having those tunes in your head.

One advice, use the foam provided with the earphones as it makes it much more comfortable with the lid on and doesn't get too bassy.

i think it was andy c who first talked about these earphones, they are great for the bike as they act like a ear plug at the same time, also the helmet wont rip them out of your ears

They block out wind noise and engine noise, so things are quieter so you dont need the music up loud too hear them.

also because they hook over your ears, they dont fall out of your helmet, like I found my old ones used too do.

plus the sound quality of them is awsome.

I bought a Sony Erricson W300i the other day and it came with a set of headphones. Best headphones I have ever owned. They are the 'bud' type that sit in your ear. They give a lot of noise reduction and the music quality is brilliant.

On long trips I find playing mind games more fun than listening to music. Adding up number plates (my record's 5 in a row so far), you get from the time you see the number plate, until you go past the next car to add them together. Obviously, the difficulty increases the faster you're going past them.
Then there's the slightly less fun of Guess the driver, or Wave at the driver/passanger. Get some funny looks from that one.

meh, guess I just never got on with music in my ear.

Oh, or of course. Going Ghost Rider sytlee down the motorway gives you something to concentrate on :p

I've never really liked the idea of listening to music while riding. At no point during my normal weekly commuting or weekend riding do I feel close to being bored, more likely to feel tired after from concentration, so why would I need music as extra stimulus? anything that takes your attention away from the road can't be a good thing IMHO.

I can't help thinking that if you need tunes on the bike, then you aren't riding it properly Having said that, I can see the benefit on a long motorway slog.

I've sorted the FJR out with an autocom, so I can listen to tunes as well as speak to my pillion or other bikes (the handsfree phone will come as soon as I sort out the Bluetooth interface from Autocom)

I keep my pda/phone in the fairing glove-box, I've fed an audio lead into there, so it's kept nice and watertight.

I've also put the autocom (and GPS) on a dedicated, switched but permenantly live circuit, operated by a small waterproof toggle switch on the right fairing panel.

This means I don't have to have the ignition on to talk to my pillion/other bikes, but also that I can easily turn it off if I need to without pulling the connector out my lid. This is handy when you need to speak to someone that's not wired in by whatever means. I did have it on a circuit that was switched with the ignition, but that meant killing the engine, taking off the lid or unplugging my lid to speak to someone else.
