Today I've been told at work that I have to bring my passport in for our HR dept to see so that I can prove i'm entitled to work in the UK. I've worked for this company for 5 years now, surely if I wasn't supposed to working here something would have showed up??
I've been working since I left school in 1981 and I've never been asked to provide any proof before, so why should I now?
I told them I dont have a passport so they told me to bring my birth certificate in, but I've not seen that for years so I'm not sure where it is. Does anyone know where I stand legally on this? Am I obliged to provide this information considering i've worked there so long?

The right to residency and work is usually a condition in most contracts these days, so they are probably within their rights to ask you to prove it, even in retrospect.

As to you having been there, have you paid much attention to recent immigration service scandals? I had 3 illegal cleaners on my wing who had until that morning been happily employed at Lunar House in Croydon - by the IND! Then there was the Chief Immigration Officer - (fairly senior middle management grade) who was offering residency for sex - who turned out to be an illegal immigrant himself.

they are just covering their arses , new immigration rules mean companies are supposed to
check , but often do not , every temp agency job I;ve been to had to bring me passport to
prove who I was,

same with new accountancy clients you have to get positive ID on who they
are , for anti money laundering laws you even have to ask grannies who are 90+ who are
deathly insulted and put in complaints against you , which nothing comes of them as I'm
legally obliged to ask such a question the law demands it, and I use a pre approved
company script which means this month alone I've had 42 complaints all related to the
anti money laundering rules. 0 stick

I would have thought a National Insurance number was enough to prove entitlement - If the government are happy for you to pay tax, then why aren't your employers?
