Non-Aerosol paints for metal

Hi folks,

For the purpose of repainting random metal parts (side stand, rearsets, peg hangers etc) I'm considering buying a spray gun (to run off a compressor).

I've tried supposed direct-to-metal spraypaints before but found they're bloody difficult to get a good finish with. The spray is a combination of spray and spitting.

I've never actually seen the paint that you would put in to a proper sprayer though. I assume it comes in tins, from where can you purchase it?

Do you need special types of paint for metals, or will general stuff do so long as you use a primer first?

Head down to a local bodyshop, they can advise you whats best to use and at some you cane even buy the paint from them.

A lot easier to just have the parts in question powdercoated... but if you're intent on painting I'll post some info when I get home later.

I suspect that due to the poisenous nature of certain spray paints you may want to make sure you know what you are doing before buying any paint.

2-pack especially gives off cyanide and you must use correct respirators/filters to ensure you don't become seriously ill.

As said, have a word with your local bodyshop to see what they suggest.

I dont think powdercoating is ideal for the things I have in mind, as it would be difficult or impractical to seperate the parts (and I assume you can't simply mask off areas).

E.g. respraying the clamps at the bottom of the forks - Removing them for powdercoating would be a nightmare. Also, rearsets, I wish to paint the majority of it but polish the heel plate, so again will require masking.

If I'm not mistaken a metallic cellulose paint with a mixture of thinner would do the trick? Applied on time of an appropriate primer?

I've seen it online for about £8 for a litre tin, not bad. Only problem with online is you dont really know what the color will be.
