Alot of people rate the ZX4R quite highly, but I don't know about the cost.

VFR400 or CBR400 are both good for 400s, ZXR400 is also good but rock hard suspension.

Best for comfort is probably the CBR400, and RVF would be the most flexible and best on the road.

So are you still looking at needing finance (i.e. having to buy from a dealer), or can you buy privately now?

NC30s will probably hold their value better than the other 400s, mainly due to their pedigree and the fact that they haven't been changed throughout the years. You can get UK NC30s as well.

CBR400 Gull-Arm (NC29) and the RVF (NC35) are more modern and will often be tidier (mainly due to their respective ages), but expect to pay a premium for them, especially from a dealer.

NC30s can occasionally be pciked up at fairly reasonable prices, ie <£1.5k, for not too knackered examples, definatley with less mileage than that GSXR400 suggested.

i wanna get a zxr400, they're prettier bikes than VFR's Smile but if i could afford it i'd probably get an RVF or new CBR, although there's an RVF going at a salvage yard for £1600

You don't really wanna be buying a salvaged grey-import V4...just asking for trouble.
