Heya.

Just wondering how many Supermoto riders are on here. Seems to be mainly sportsbike or tourer riders from what I can see. Which is fair enough as I ride a sportsbike ( if you class a rs 125 as a sportsbike Razz )

Its just that I wonaa get a big supermoto ( 400cc-600cc ) and I was wondering what you think of your bikes?

So, what do you ride, What do you like about the bike, What do you hate about the bike, What bike would you be getting next?

Got an XR400 that i want to supermoto but can't, because it's my old man's!

He lets me ride it regularly and it's awesome, i didn't expect much from it being a 400 single, but the engine's very torquey and wheelies of the power in first and clutches up nicely in second.

Hates? Hmm, not many about it, just a shame it's f**king tall making it hard for a short arse like me to sit on it Laughing The only other pet hate i can think of right now is how slippery it is riding on the road with knobbly rubber on it.

Still looks fucking ace when you hammer round a bend and stick your leg out, knackered the bottoms of my trainers doing that too many times Laughing

Next bike? CBR6RR 06 or K6 GSXR

Have a search in the Supermoto section, there should be quite a bit in there to give you an idea of costs, what's a good starter etc.

No problem for me at all Smile I use boots and proper protective gear.

Seems pretty fucking retarded to ruin your trainers every time you ride the bike, when paying out £30 for a cheap pair of boots would sort you out.

I love that. I wonder what happens if the cost of putting you back together if you come off is too much for the tax payer to cover, so we just don't bother? For about £30 all in I managed to pick up a leather jacket n trousers from a charity shop. Sure, second hand. But not a mark on them. Boots, £30 if that. Gloves, £10? I assume you managed to afford a lid.

hehe, not meaning to have a go. It's just it really don't cost much to cover yourself with something that might just save your skin..

Sorry, I'm off-topic completely..

Well... I wear trainers but I stick spikes on them pointing inwards, so that I'm really knackered if I have an off Wink.

Actually, I just found some non-bike thick leather boots that were comfortable.

I do still leave legs unprotected mostly, something I should sort out, however rest of the body is ok.

Bloke at work wore trainers 'cos they were comfy.
Popped home at lunch time.
Car pulled out infront of him. Snapped his ankle.
Bone scraped along the road.
Months of agony as they let his bone regrow, then strechted his bones apart to make his leg a bit longer and repeated the process.

He'd have had a badly grazed knee and probably still a broken ankle if he'd have been wearing some all-purpose boots, but no bone scraping.

Getting back to the topic in question (don't we have enough safety nazi threads on the forum to be going on with?).

I ride a KLE500 with 17" wheels fitted. Not the traditional supermoto, perhaps should be given a different genre of its own (commutermotard?). I did ride an MZ street-moto which is a foctory supermoto.

The KLE doesn't have nearly such fancy running gear, so you can't take quite as many liberties and get away with them. What it WILL do though is sit at 80mph all day long in relative comfort without intrusive vibrations and the nagging feeling that you are caning the knackers off the engine. It has a comfy seat, it has a luggage rack, it goes round corners passably well and eats crappy road surfaces and overbanding for breakfast.

Tank range is still abysmal though.

Oh yea, supermotos....

No offence, but personally I'd consider the MZ a commuter-moto as well, same as quite a few of the CCMs, etc.

When we're talking a dry weight coming up to my SV (or more in this case) and less power, I don't see it's too 'super'.

For me a 'super'moto is a 100kg or so converted off road bike that is so called because it offers more than other types of bikes for riding on tight twisty roads.

Saying this, from what I've seen, a lot of the owners of decent supermotos still don't really use the extra they offer over a heavier road biased bike.

But then, when people get them to use on the road for fun, I have to wonder why choose one over something like that SV, or much more fun in my opinion, an RS250 or similar.

Note this is aimed at people buying a fairly expensive supermoto for road fun - I can more understand the positives for a heavier reliable bike used for distance.

For the record I have owned a supermoto in the past.
I've also ridden the same model with decent road-biased trail tyres.

Only pushed the limits of the trail tyres once - and that was thanks to stupidity. Didn't push the bike with supermoto wheels and tyres any further, which to me suggests it wouldn't be worth spending more money on to get this (the supermoto wheel'd bike was quite cheap).
Uprated brakes are worth it though.

My opinions, summed up
Competition machine based Supermotos:
Offers very good handling, which is rarely used even by good riders and British roads don't give much opportunity to use, to be fair. Expensive for what you're getting.

Mid range Enduro based:
Usually way overpriced for what they are, over-rated when compared to road bikes of similar nature.

Heavy 'do it all' trail bikes with road wheels and brakes
Can make sense for doing distance or day-to-day use.

Generally, from what I see, there seems to be the 'Ducati' effect - a lot of people are prepared to pay quite a lot of money for the look or percieved status of the bike, ignoring that they maybe actually getting 'less' from the bike in return.

Saying all that, I may do what I advice against and see if I can get some wide rims laced onto the spare wheels on CRM125.

That makes a lot of sense.

I suppose the reason that I have a motard style bike is because I do a lot of miles on some fairly dubious roads that I don't know very well.

When you come honking round a corner to find the road littered in loose gravel interspersed with full thickness potholes and a mass of overbanding, you suddenly find yourself at an advantage. Everyone else is shitting themselves and gripping the saddle with their arse cheeks while the motard kind of boings itself over in a fairly relaxed manner.

Went over to Ireland a few years back with my MZ. There were numerous times that I would 'go off on one' and my mate would try to follow on his SV650 without sucess. The road surface was shit, there were humps and bumps all over the place and lunatic corners with all sorts of crap all over them. He simply couldn't keep both wheels on the ground on the SV while the MZ just glided over it all. It's the only time I used the full suspension travel (about 12") on that bike.

alone, taking it off topic again. There aren't any charity shops or anything like that out here so there's no other option to buy new and even then it's limited.

We've only got two small shops dealing in Spidi, XPD Boots, Alpinestars, AGV lids and Arai gear all told.

And the worst part is all their gear is stupidly over priced making it hard for young 'un bikers like myself to get our little paws on it.

I have a DT125X supermoto. Nothing as fancy as a 600 etc, but i still love it. Razz

There's nothing that i really dislike about my bike, apart from the fact that it's not self cleaning Wink. Oh and that it feels like it's going to shake itself to pieces when i get above 70mph Laughing

I love the way it looks, the smell when i start it first thing in the morning, how light it is, the way it's springy and fun to throw around, how it's quite fast for a 125 - just everything really!

I would like to try a sports bike next, just because i like to try different things in every aspect of life. I love the look of this years R6, but i wonder how i'd get on going from a tall supermoto where i'm sat upright, to a compact sports bike where i'm bent forward... might take a while to adjust i think.

I had a 125 mz super moto, which was far more fun than it had any right to be. I now have a DR350, which has a similar top speed but gets there a damn sight quicker. Both are fun, however the ridiculously good handling of the little 125 on 400 sportsbike rubber made the MZ something else to ride.

I have ridden a large capacity ktm (620) and a triumph daytona 600, i know which one i'd rather have, here's a clue, it tops out at about 100.

in some ways i'm not fond of the whole motoX/super moto scene. to me, it doesnt seem practical for general road riding. smaller petrol tank, weird tyre's, super bouncy springs.
it's also that i mostly just see 125 L's as the chavs think they're cooler than a CG125 or SR125 as a first geared test bike.

in contradiction of this, i'd love to get one and might well get a 125 in february to use for commuting and offroading where possible. 'cus yea they do look cool, and it'd be fun to go off road Twisted Evil

What's that thing you are reading this message on again?

Wouldn't it be great if you could connect it to all sorts of other things like thousands of shops and auction sites that sell almost anything under the sun. Then you could go shopping for cheap gear without leaving your seat.

If you were sneaky, you could even go to the shop and try stuff on then buy it in the same size from somewhere else
