right,
Would you buy a bike thats been well used on a track but maintained and looked after in the way a bike should. I've been offered a bike (02, 954 blade) for £3500 and its in good condition but ive seen it ridden (but i'm still tempted). If this bike was in the paper i probably wouldnt think twice. Would you buy it or would you rather pay extra to find one that you havnt seen ridden?

Being well maintained is a better plus than being thrashed a bit is a negative in my book.

Bikes that have been 'used' properly often make a little more power as well.

Well it depends what "used on a track" means. Mine has been round the Nuremburg but not in a race or race day and is as sweet as a nut. A raced machine I would not touch with a barge pole.

A race bike will have been thrashed for more of the time.

However it will probably have had very regular oil changes and have a lot lower actual miles done that most.

And been thrashed from cold, lobbed down the track and bodged together between races.

All the best

do you mean tuned or something? , I thought petrol engines lost 1-2% power for every 10,000 miles you put on them while diesels gain power the more miles you cram on them.

Rarely are race bikes thrashed from cold.

Even if I start with a cold engine, I'll leave it running in the collecting area until it's decently up to temperature - as pretty much everyone does.

Usually being lobbed down the track is fairly obvious if something serious has happened, similarly for the associated bodging.

Itchy: I believe it's considered opinion that bikes have been run in to manufacturers guidelines, then ridden sedately generally have less power than those run in on a dyno, then thrashed - as the latter have 'freed up' a bit.
Also, racers tend to get their engines 'refreshed' as needed if they're losing power. Don't often see road bikes getting their engines stripped every year to keep them as good as possible.

if its been well maintained then it should be no problem. the bike is built to withstand high RPM and high speed on a track, that's what it is for.

it'll go like stink if its been well opened up matey!

I doubt the oil is up to temperature by the end of a short 5 lap race.

All the best
