Hi

Now released:-

https://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_transstats/documents/downloadable/dft_transstats_612588.pdf

Also this, which lists the factors in accidents:-

https://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_transstats/documents/downloadable/dft_transstats_612594.pdf

Seems exceeding the speed limit was a contributory cause of 4% of motorcycle accidents.

All the best

Keith

Even on a quick skim through its absolutely fascinating, personally I pleased to see that they are separating out under 50cc motorcycles in some classes, seems like some kind of acknowledgement that peds are often ridden differently to bigger bikes.

That table uses some confusing figures. They appear to be just over half what they should be. The figures are constructed from accidents which had a contributing factor reported. However, 37% had no contributing factor.

I have a feeling sudden braking would be a hell of a lot higher in the rankings if every accident were taken into account (impossible, i know) as only accidents attended by police officers were taken into account.

Jack

Lack of experience, sudden braking, going too fast for road conditions, and loss of control appear to be the major ones in that table.

Let's look at it from this angle:

If you fall off or have an accident whilst driving/riding a motorcycle and not whilst you were stationary it seems the most obvious 'common' factor statistically in all cases was speed.
Or am I missing something?

so you ride past me at 1mph, 10mph or 100mph and I whack you with a baseball bat.

yeah.. speed was the cause of that accident. Let's put a camera up.

Yep, the data is on the links at the start in pdf format, and you can download the free reader for those files.

All the best

so you do agree that in this case speed was not a factor? (uninamginative or not)

so your comment above is incorrect

okay, a more relevant scenario. You're slowing for a right turn, and someone runs into the back of you because they weren't paying attention, and was on the phone. They weren't speeding, indeed they were travelling slower than the limit, but just weren't paying attention. Was speed a factor here?

factor means something that contributed to the initial cause of the accident, not to the severity of the accident.

I have never said 'speed' over or under whatever limit is in force is the sole cause of accident.
But it is an important factor.
The faster the speed the bigger the bang.

9/10 for imagination.

Mobile phone was a good point.

Buht, we were all having accidents before the use of mobile phones.

The main factor in accidents is inattention to the task.

I think many of the members on here have got that impression from you, whether you meant it or not.

Substitute phone for turning over casette/switching 8-track/shouting at kids/lighting a fag[/quote]

Exactly, and if enough attention is being paid by everyone, then the speed (assuming it's appropriate for conditions) is almost irrelevant.
