Ok, after reading through a few posts about mods and accidents etc, it brought my attention to the fact that, some of us, are our own worst enemy.

Who, and be completely honest, will admit to riding like a twat every chance they get.

We all know that the acceleration of a bike is far greater than that of a boy racers lowered, mod'd, big bore, ice'd up, penis extension. Why not show them that there cars are not worth the time, effort and money that they spent on them? (yes - besides the fact that its dangerous and does not stick rigidly to the law)

That initial acceleration from red > red amber > green up to the speed limit doesn't take long at all. If the road ahead is clear, why not just red line every gear until you run short of the black stuff (Tarmac, not shit (yes, and i know shits brown... normally, i am seing the doctor about it Wink ) )

I'm probably going to get a few people calling my a wanker for admitting to this... or should they be thinking, yes, this guy has realised early that hes a bit of a tit and will hopefully sort his life out before he ends it prematurely.

My NSR is still restricted, and is meant to only do 85mph ish. I have had 95 out of it, and no, that wasn't down the side of a cliff, it will do that to me some days, the next day, same road/weather conditions and it will only do 80. (on private/closed roads of course).

What i'm really trying to find out is, if/when i get the licence and the money to buy a bigger bike, is it the norm to fracture the law occasionally or is it just me. i am, rightly/wrongly governed to 85ish (which, IMHO is stupid, if the law is 70, why not restrict "L plate warriors" to 70???). What is gonna happen to me if i get a bigger beast to roam the roads with.

What are your opinions, real life stories, life altering "moments" etc. Did you once, ride like a twat and have now seen the error of your ways, or do you all still do it? Sign your name with a twat if you are, or have been.

This post, of course, is all TOTALY hyperthetical. I would not wish the curse of speed on anyone. Its your right hand, do what you can to keep it under control! Wink

I ride like an old man.

I accelerate hard off traffic lights, but I only come to them about once a week so its not a big problem. On the present bike I rarely go above 70 apart from on the motorway, and when I go out for a ride in the backlanes I look for sweepers and nice cruising roads.

However, on my 125 and my 400 I rode them like I stole them, because thats how they liked to be ridden, they needed revs to get anywhere and frantic gear changing to maintain motion.

So its largely down to the bike as well as the rider - You don't see people thrashing cruisers, becuase thats not how you ride one, same as you don't see people trying to cruise and ride relaxed on a sports 400.

So its not so much I saw the error of my ways and stopped riding fast, I just got a slower bike and enjoyed going slower more.

Good stuff, Robby.

It's worrying to know, that there isn't really any national speed limit and the fact, that I wont be restricted once I do my test. Both that and the way I ride wouldn't go too well...Maybe. Although I still prefer it over the technique used in mainland UK. Smile

And yes. I do ride like a plonker at times, but really I don't think negatively about it. Doings donuts, racing grannies in their 1.1 Fiestas is all in the name of fun. Of course. The more conservative folks would have a grim view about some of those methods.

You do, after all live once. Riding a bike is one of those 'Fun risks' we take and has it's consequences if it goes wrong. Enjoy it while it lasts, either way, like the way Robby does or the way Joey Dunlop use to.

I don't think accelerating hard from lights is particularly 'twatish' in the grand scheme of things. To start with I usually pull to the front of traffic, so it's can be the safest thing to do.
There are a lot of things many of us do on the roads that are a lot lot higher in the scale of 'twatish' things.

Presuming you don't keep redlining through all the gears on a bigger bike you're not going to be causing significant danger to anyone (though red line in 3rd on most newish 600s is around about 100mph and it don't take long to get there.) It may be more dangerous on a restricted NSR if the car's are actually competition... but on most bigger bikes you're well away before they have passed the lights on the other side of the junction.

A bloke that used to live up the road from me mentioned a time I had 'beat' him off the lights, saying he didn't expect it. I had to explain that I do do that whatever... completely empty road and I'll still try and get the prefect launch Smile.
It's one of the reasons I like bikes they accelerate hard.

As for the danger to myself, I accept that, it's one of the risks you take for the enjoyment you get. If I was really worried about being injured, I'd put some padding around my stairs (lot of deaths happen going up/down stairs I believe) and hop straight into a nice big Volvo with lots of airbags and armour plating to make sure I walk away from any accident.
When I'm riding I do try to insure that I'm minimising the risk to other people... ie that I'm in the most vunlurable situation and I'm not putting others (ie pedestrians etc) in that situation.

Personally, I'm starting to do loads of trackdays, they may be expensive, but if you really want to push a bike near it's limits then they offer so much more than the road.

Sometimes I ride like a twat and take risks that I know I shouldn't Lately tho I have been calming down, I never used to stick to 30/40 limits but generally I do now. (Since I was doing 60ish and got pulled out on - luckily they saw me and stopped, cos I couldn't of done)
As for other twattish things, I don't overtake on blind corners etc. and when I filter I do it slowly. So I'm pretty safe in those respects.

As for accelerating hard - I normally do. Not only is it fun, but its also better for fuel comsumption!

i notice you have/had a padded tank protector on ur blade, what kinda riding position do u have, and why. i always seem to have my arse up against the step between the rider and pillion seat, mainly cos im a lanky bastard and its more comfortable, my old man says he rides close as he can to the tank, he recons the bike responds better on road but he sits back whilst crusing.

I like to ride hard. has you may see from my pictures. This last incident happened the day after my girlfriends dad, gave me a lecture about bikes and why do I ride fast, pull tricks etc.

so guess what? The next day me and the missus go out to my fav rndabt and get some knee down vid footage, and I get cut up and come off. (Apparntly the car DID hit me)

I had my missus on the back once stuck behind a lorry. The road was bout 1 mile long and straight, so I knocked it into 3rd and past him. Then I took a look down and was clocking 110mph in 3rd!

Also tried to see how fast I could go in the gears and took it to 70 in 1st and 90 in 2nd. and how many crashes??

Suzuki FR50: parked into the car in front
came off on oil round a corner
came off on ice
Wrote off in major RTA

Honda MT50: None

Quak KE100: Blow up at 80mph when oil pump went
come off when off riding

Yam RD125 LC no1: None, sold within 2weeks (found out insurance w/o)

Yam RD125 LC no2: Come off cornering
Wreacked wiring/lights
brake rod snapped, wrapped rnd rear wheel
Shock come of mount

FZR 250: Came off with pillion (ex wife) while cornering on wet turn (moss)
Dropped the bike on side!
Forgot was in gear while parking in bike rack at college, and let clutch out. The bike wheel rack went through the fairing.

R6 no1: Come out of drive, stalled and droped on side (Twice,

house was on a 1in5 hill)
Flipped bike in a wheelie causeing body damage (Me and the bike)

R6 no2: Pulled out on by car driver!

There you go!

I think I would have to claim semi twatishness.
I do like to get away from lights quickly (an easy thing to do on the ZZR1200!), I have been known to ride hard on both the ZZR and the V-Raptor, but only when the road/traffic allow it, and neither the ZZR or the V-Raptor like to be overtaken by anything. However I stick very strictly to 30/40 and (most) 50 limits, because they are generally there for the safety of pedestrians.

It is *extremely* rare for me to ride like a twat. I dont particularly want to crash, so do what I can to avoid having that happen.

Trouble is, everyone's definition of twat is different.

I wouldn't consider legging it off the lights particularly twattish, unless you're pretending to be on the drag stip and getting past the ton in a 30 zone.

Speeding is so situation-dependant. 130 filtering through traffic on a packed M25 is deeply twattish cos you stand a very high chance of having an accident. 130 down the deserted M25 at 4 in the morning... only twattish if you get caught by the plod.

Take it to the strip or the track. It's infinitely more fun when you know you're not going to come round a corner and find giant pothole / diesel slick / parked car. Smile

I used to ride like a twat all the time when I first got my RS for example I was spotted by a friend weaving between traffic at 80mph in a 40 zone only slowing down for speed camera's but I just generally calmed down with that!

I used to filter as fast as possible but I take it easy when filtering now so that I can look at all of my surroundings properly to decide whether an idiot in a white van is going to pull out fast to stop me from overtaking! Sometimes I do still ride like a twat depends what mood I'm in.
