What is this urban myth that driving alcoholic drinks with straws makes you more drunk , surely since the alcohol content does not change it can't be possible unless it means that it increases the volume you drink?

any thoughts?

ta

(note I've experimented on mutants I've been out with though they can drink 10-15 pints and not even be slightly pissed)

I thaght the straw thing was to put it in a bottle of whatever, and fold it over.

So when you put your mouth over the top of the bottle, you can "Shot" it without having to take your mouth off the bottle to swallow.

If that makes sense?

There could be one explanation (just thought of it now).

Normally when you drink a beer you sip at it ('cos it tastes like shite Laughing ) and then stop. Hence it takes longer for you to drink it and the alcohol is absorbed into the blood over a longer period of time whereas if you use a straw you don't really taste it and so can drink more alcohol more quickly. This will lead to more alcohol being absorbed into the bloodstream more quickly than without a straw thus making you feel more drunk.

That's my explanation anyway. Laughing Thumbs Up

As far as I knew drinking with straws get your pissed quicker because you don't take much air in with every sip.

When you drink something that is slightly gassy through a straw you swallow more gas.
Gasses are absorbed into your blood stream more quickly than liquids and thus affect your brain more quickly.
Therefore you get drunk more quickly. Thumbs Up

The straw down a side of a bottle simply allows air back into the bottle as you drink it, so you can down the contents without having to take the bottle away from your mouth (break the seal).

The main reason for the straw in the bottle is do you don't get an airlock. This stops the drink from "glugging" out the bottle and means it just flows straight out.

In the trade it's known as the strawpedo!

From reading that, I think you've done enough testing!

Ahh yes, I remember hearing that for the first time during a hazy, blurry night at University and finding the name hilarious....

What you don't know about the vortex method (works only with bottles that are not 100% full) , essentially you swirl it so it forms a vortex and leaves the centre open so that air can get back into the bottle so it doesn't chug.
