Just started looking at getting a credit card today. Would be so much easier if they didn't complicate everything with special offers.

Anyways...

I'm trying to find a credit card that doesn't charge for currency conversion when you pay for things online (game subscription) and wont charge me interest if I pay the bill straight away.

Does a card like that exist?

I'd ask at the bank but they'll be too biased towards their own card.

My Nationwide visa card didn't charge me for foreign usage and came with a 59 day interest free period.

I don't think ANY card charges interst if you pay it off in full within the month.

Unless you're using it or cash withdrawls, which are usually charged from the day the withdrawl is made.

All credit cards have a 56 day (or similar..) interest free period, most don't mention this because they know it's common knowledge, so don't shop around based on that.

Thanks mate.

Couple more stupid questions.

When it says 59 days interest free, does that mean if you spend $15 on 01/10/06 and pay the credit card off on 29/10/06 it will only cost you $15? No extra charges at all?

Oh and how do you actually pay the bill for the credit card? Can I just put my banks debit card details in online?

Thanks alot for the help mate, saving me alot of internet searching time. Too much rubbish and dodgy advertising to look through.

Thumbs Up

Rick

[EDIT] It's mostly the currency conversion bit I'm interested in. Was just starting to think they charge interest even if you pay it off because of some of the bits im reading online now.

Are you talking about $$ purchases? Are you in the US, as the rules may be different out there.

If you buy something for £15 and pay the card company that £15 within between 28 and 59 days of the purchase, then you will pay no interest.

You can pay your bill via direct bank transfer/bill payment online, over the counter at various other places which will be listed on the back of your statement, or over the phone with a debit card.

If you get stuck, you can always post them a cheque.

I'm in the UK, but I'll be paying a US company for a game subscription of about $15 a month. Right now I pay the $15 + a £2.50 conversion charge, so it's costing me a fortune as a %.

I might use the card for petrol aswell. Just been advised to get one to build up a good credit history. I've got no other real use for the card, and will easily keep on top of the payments.

Rick.

I regularly use my Barclaycard for purchases from America (usually books or records/CDs on Amazon) and Europe as it offers insurance on the purchases (ie they don't arrive and you've paid for them Barclays will allegedly do chasing and/or reimburse your funds).

If you pay the balance when you receive the credit card bill (at the end of the month) you will pay no interest. Unless, as feef said, you withdraw cash.
Only partially pay the balance, then the interest starts to get hefty.

Confused

I've never been charged anything other than the standard exchange rate on my Barclaycard. Have used it in Ireland, Canada and Morocco. Jon used his Egg (I think) card in the Caribbean and as far as I'm aware wasn't charged any extra.

Used my barclays debit card in the Caribbean and was billed for the equivalent amount in pounds....

Read the small print, or see an advisor and ask the question there.

I've never been charged anything by capital one for foreign transactions either.

Nationwide's rediculous advertising campaign of trying to make people think that they are the only ones who don't charge interest if you use your card abroad or buy from abroad seems to be working!

To answer a question someone asked further up, you get a good few interest free weeks from the date of the bill, not the date of the purchase. For example I got a bill yesterday, and I have until November some time to pay it without paying any interest.

I've always been charged the rate of exchange plus a handling fee. But then I usually make cash withdrawls abroad. I think maybe Nationwide are the one that doesnt charge extra for cash abroad. The two people I know who live abroad have a Nationwide card for this reason.
