 Posted: 19:34 - 14 Oct 2006 Post subject: Better vision in fog |
 |
|
This morning at about 6:30 it was incredibly foggy here, you couldnt see more than 100 meters away. So I put on my fluorescent jacket and set off for work.
Within a couple of minutes my vison was soaked which completely impared my vision, no matter how much I wiped it down it kept getting soaked, in the end I rode with it up, still couldnt see too well but better than with the visor down.
I also noticed I could see further with my lights off, however this meant that other cars couldnt see me so I didnt ride round like this.
This is the first time I've ever been in a fog before daylight hours, and to be honest it wasnt fun. I really doubt there is any way of improving ones vision in these kinds of conditions, but Id be happy to hear any advice

If its really bad i'll put pushbike LED's on the back of my coat (very bright)
Problem with the headlight is it bounces light right back towards you off the fog, highbeam makes it far far worse! the trick is to have light aimed right down, fog lamps need to be low down to be effective, and yellow tinted lamps are mose efficient..
Fog lamps are cheap nowdays (£20or so) ____________________ >RidingSkills<->Tech Tips<->MyBikes< |

Theres not much you can really do about it, visor up is best unless you wear glasses in which case your stuffed anyway. Don't turn your lights off even in daytime fog. Its not just the traffic coming at you, its the ones coming from behind. Anyone tried rain X or similar, it would be interesting to know how it copes in fog? ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

Had a 40mile ride home with a friend lastnight at about midnight, took us 2 hours to get home, got pulled over by some bored yet concerned police (fair enough) would have probobly escorted us back if we were closer.
Average visability was less than 10m, sometimes getting as bad as 2, definately unpleasant... and cold... and wet... did i mention i was wearing summer gear? ____________________ Chrome don't get you home but it sure makes you look good pushing it there.

4.30am this morning, could hardly see a damn thing.
Visor up, 20 mph all the way, pulled in behind a Royal Mail truck heading into the delivery office, and followed him all the way to work. |
