chain problem help please

all of a sudden ive heard knocking and slaping near the back wheel,so i put the bike on its stand let the wheel run slow in 2nd and the chain is all over the place really slack but the seems to be on its marks.does the wheel need pulling back futher,how can this happen? and the bikes m.o.t is at the end the mounth .any ideas please? Idea

What do you mean by the chain being on it's marks ?

Adjust the chain until it's at the correct strain, I think it's usually 20-30mm movement.

Have you ever adjusted it before ?

no not yet,but i checked the movement not long ago and it was tight now its all over the place?

Sounds like your chain is loose. Needs adjusting every now and again.

Ask a friendly biker who knows what they are doing to show you if you've never done it before

Check/Adjust the chain every 600 miles sort-of.

ive tryed un doing the nut for the back wheel before but it would not move must need loads of leverage?

Yes it probalbly will, it should be on very tight.
