I'm looking for inspiration.
I'm hoping to replace my car next year, so am looking about to see what I can get, however, I'm not sure what to go for, so thought I'd see what you lot thought.
This is the criteria:
Must be Different/ interesting (no mondeos or vectras please!)
Must be at least a 2+2, if not a proper 4-seater.
Coupe/saloon/hatch. No convertibles or estates
manual box (don't mind a flappy paddle job, as long as it's a decent one)
must be fun to drive, handle well. Top speed is less of an issue than the overall driving experience.
Must be able to tow the bike trailer (im not looking for a towing machine, I'm not a caravaner)
Reliability isn't a massive issue. It's not my main transport, and I'd probably not buy new.
Budget: topping out at £16k.
Some of the ones I'm thinking about so far:
Alfa 156/GT (lovely drivers cars)
Mitsubishi Evo (Scooby imprezas are too common)
Lexus IS200 (really not sure about this tho)
Maserati Quatroporte or Ghibli
Saab 93 Aero turbo
MG ZT V8. (looks like grandad's Rover75, but it's a 260bhp, rear wheel drive animal. I like that )
can you get towbars for TVR Cerberas, or Maserati 3200 GTs?
So there you go.. maybe you might have an idea of where I'm coming from
give me some more ideas to play with.

Nice enough cars. Just a bit, well, not special. My father has one and it just doesn't inspire me.

Err, servicing might frighten you.
| feef wrote: | Lexus IS200 (really not sure about this tho) |
Far less appealing than the 156

Doubt you would get a tow bar. However the servicing might REALLY frighten you. On the V6 engines the cam chains are replaced at 48000 miles, which is either a heads off (engine in car) or engine out job. Cam belts are a 24000 mile job. Fuel filters are not cheap and need doing regularly. Brake pads are seriously expensive (from memory ~£250 for front pads from Maserati). Replacement turbos for the Ghibli Cup were originally £4k each (presume they have come down in price). Exhaust will cost you well over £1k and last about 3 years (or about half that for a full stainless system).
Yes I would love one (make it a 2 Maserati household) but not sure I could cope with the expense for everyday use.

A Sweddish built Vectra.

Could be tempting but it is a big car for only 260hp.

Very much doubt it.
Other thing to think about is a Vauxhall Monaro (Holden Monaro really, big V8 coupe and pretty cheap).
All the best

I think I'd rather go for something a little more understated.
I'm not a fan of massive body-kits, and I don't have anything to prove.
things like the Skyline are just too ostentatious
even the Evo is a bit more 'in your face' than I'd normally go for, although you CAN get them without the full-on ralli-art kits.
I like the ideas of things like the Monaro, or MG ZT-V8, because they look relatively mundane.
I'm not looking for flash.

E46 M3. Willy waving, can't help it if it's a good car. Seen 2001 models with 70k go for 15k or so.
