Not a legal requirement to have mirrors (well wasnt)

So I never used them when I was young!

Anyone done this, yes lots. It's no problem, you just have to shoulder check before doing something. I use my XR250 on the roads and its not got any mirrors, well, it had one mirror but I took that off. Razz

Most of my riding is on quiet roads anyway so it doesn't really make any difference. If you do lots of riding in traffic then taking your mirrors off might not be the best idea, bikes I've used that didn't have mirrors have been road registered track bikes or off roaders so there's an actual reason other than "I wanted to take them off" for not having mirrors fitted.

Wouldnt recommend it... makes dual carriageways and motorways a nightmare... life savers at 70 mph and above are a bit iffy.

You learn to get a very flexible neck very quickly. I'd not recommend it on a bike which hasn't got a lot of power as dodgy lane changes can and will get you in a lot of trouble. If you can accelerate briskly around/ past whatever you're overtaking, you might not get shunted by whatever is coming steaming up in the outside lane behind you. Get a faired bike and crouch down, then lifesavers at a ton plus aren't a problem, other than that it pays not to take your eyes off what's in front of you at that speed. Laughing

I've ridden with no mirrors after I've spread them out across the road before and it bugged the hell out of me, especially as it was a dual carriageway.

Badly adjusted mirrors can be just as dangerous as you tend to assume that if you can't see anything in them behind you, then all you need is a shoulder check to be safe. Embarassed

Every bike ive had, the mirrors have always been completly useless. No matter hoe much i adjust them all i seem to see is me shoulder so ive got to lift me arm up to see. Might as well just do a quick shoulder check

I'd always do a "life saver" when changing lanes anyway and now I'm riding my first bike without mirrors. Haven't had any trouble yet, apart from wondering where my fellow riders are.

It might just be me, but riding without mirrors feels as if the bike's going faster - mind you, when riding, I can only just see the top of the screen with my head in the normal position anyway.

Found it a nuisance when one of the bolt's fell out of mine meaning it pointed at the floor, made changing lanes a right hassle, in the end I just sat in the middle lane of the motorway unless I got really fed up as it was just easier. Though probably just as dangerous not changing lanes.

Will also make spotting Police alot harder. Wink

i can't see out of my mirrors any way. i don't find it a problem, you should look over your shoulder any way before you switch lanes.

I have a real problem with this.

Life savers were fine back when te roads were not busy.

On the M25 they could kill you.

You snatch a glance behind at 80/90 in heavy traffic and somebody brakes in front of you. Bye bye.

So I suppose it depends where you are riding. I would not ride without mirrors.

Makes rideing more difficult for no good reason imo, allready enough shite to look out for for without having to crane your neck arorund, just a right pain in the ass.. just like rideing with no indicators, looking big and clever comes very low down the priority list, way under not getting flattened..

The thing is, even when out on a weekend, if you're on a decent road in nice weather, it's very much bad manners to be overtaking when another biker has started to overtake you. It doesn't really make a lot of sense to ride without them if you're planning to change lanes/ overtake frequently.

Great idea. Try it for a month, then, if you're still alive, try duck-taping over your visor.

Will do, that's next on the cards

Thing is I have a shitty aftermarket fairing I hate, can see fuck all in the mirrors anyway, and wanted to convert it to naked again for ages, not payday yet tho so I can't order 10mm thread mirrors, so thought I might as well just take em off anyway

yeah i have done this, not really a big problem as long as you life saver. But i did find it a bit of a inconvinicance not having them when i started commuting so put them back on, just makes it easier for changing lanes and filtering

Riding without mirrors is retarded...Why should you turn your head to see something, and risk not seeing the guy in front of you slam on his brake, when with mirrors you just turn your eyes, and see both things at the same time. They don't look that bad at all, and if you want to, just buy nicer looking ones...

Then you're riding too close to the vehicle infront.
Rember the difference between a life saver and a shoulder check.

Avoid doing life savers and you may find your life is not saved when a vehicle is moving into where you want to be, in your blind spot.

It is perfectly possible to shoulder checks safely if you are riding sensibly (not up the arse of the vehicle infront, for a start).

Of course you can just make sure you're going faster than all the other traffic, so you only need to look ahead Wink Razz.

Generally I do prefer riding with mirrors, but don't have a problem without (two of my useable road bikes don't have mirrors, two do).

I rode 7000 miles last year without mirrors on my XJ1100. At least half were done on the M25 and the rest in heavy London commuter traffic filtering all the way. Never had a problem with it and never missed the mirrors either, but I was doing dozens of lifesavers per journey.

Now I have a GSXR600 and I couldn't do without the mirrors. Lifesavers were simple on the XJ because of it's sit-up seating position. The lean-forward GSXR makes lifesavers awkward and I keep catching my chinguard on the shoulder armour of my leathers. I use the mirrors instead and only do lifesaver when I lose my spatial awareness and need to check my blind spots for other bikes.
