You need them by law, i got stopped as my front had came off, but rear was on, i still got done for no L Plates, £60 fine, 3 points,
It will also invalidate your insurance as you are
'LC20 - Driving without inaccordance to your license'
So technically, you wouldn't be insured, legal, and would have a fine and 3 points.
Not worth it really, for the sake of £1.50 or w/e from a garage. |

you will be unlucky to get pulled for no plate but as people say get another one, any will do as long as it stays on your bike and can be seen, if you get pulled you will most likly find that the plate fell off wont be a good excuse even if it is true. ____________________ 2nd time around CBT: 8/9/11

My mate lost his rear L plate on a speed hump (trust me i got it in the face when i was behind him). I radiod to tell him and we drove to the nearest petrol station. But we got stopped 2 miles from the station by a traffic cop (how unlucky). He luckily let us off and we carried on to get one as he said he was heading the same way (i think it was really to check if we would get one). one tip never get one from a petrol station it cost him £10 when the bike shop had them for 99p |

You can get up to 12 on a provisonal. How the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995 affects you
If you reach six or more penalty points on your driving licence within two years of passing your first driving test, ie during the probationary period, your driving licence will be revoked. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), acting on behalf of the Secretary of State, will automatically revoke your driving licence when notified by a court or fixed penalty office. There is no right of appeal against revocation under the provisions of the act. You may only appeal against the conviction, which led to the revocation of your driving licence through the convicting court.
All valid penalty points will be taken into account when deciding whether six or more points have been accumulated in the two-year probationary period. Penalty points gained prior to the first driving test, which are within the three-year validity period, will also be taken into account. However, these will only come into scope of the Act if you incur further penalty points during the probationary period. Also, penalty points incurred after the probationary period has expired will be taken into account if the offence was committed during the probationary period.
How to regain your full licence
As the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995 reverts your driving status back to learner, you must follow the same procedures as a first time applicant ie pay the current application fee for a new provisional licence. An exchange fee will also be charged when converting the provisional to full. A full licence cannot be granted to you until you obtain a provisional licence and passed the relevant driving test.
Full entitlement to all categories of vehicle previously held will only be reinstated upon passing a test in any one of the driver's previously held entitlements. A successful test for entitlement to a category of vehicle not previously held will result in a full licence for that category only.
So you can still take your test if you have 6 or more on a provisonal but if you was to get any points on your first 2 years then the ones you got on your provisional would count towards the 6 ____________________ Http://www.manchesterbikers.net |

I lost my back L-plate a while back. I was 15 minutes from home so decided to rip the front one off, chucked it in the top box and carried on
If you leave one plate on then chances are you'll get pulled for sure. If it happens again, remove the remaining one, head off for home and get it sorted. |

Ebay. I got 5 L plates for £1.50 delivered
I got stopped once cos my l plate had flapped over and covered my number plate. As soon as I pulled over I said to him "L plate?" and he said "yup, best get it sorted hadnt ya?". He looked at the rest of my bike and said "doesnt seem to be anything else with the bike so off you go but if I catch ya again blah blah". I knew my L plate was doing it but I stuckl it on the day before and then used the bike for work the next day and was on my way home..What he didnt realise was im not using road legal tyres, I dont have a number plate light, my numberplate is at a silly angle so from a distance it looks half the size, my front lights are not road legal, and I didnt have a tax disc (thats a fineable offence on its own! But I had bought it online and was waiting for it). ____________________ 04' DT125RE (run-a-bout) // 89' DT125R (rebuilt + supermoto conversion)

The stiff ones are about £2 each from a bike shop
2 stick on ones are 64p for 2 from ASDA.
I have an illegal front one (cut out around the L, with about 5 mm of white showing) stuck on the front mud guard, had my L plate like this both times i come off, both with police on the scene and they just thought 'well i have seen worse, atleast you have one'
Didn't realise i had broken my back one though.....went and got a new one the day after.....
If they stop you just play innocent and act as though you was totally oblivious to it. And make out that you will go to a shop that sells them to get one there and then...if they start following you then you best go somewhere to get one, no matter what the price...if they piss off, then you can get a cheaper one some other time |

I couldnt find any hardback ones anywhere
My back one kept comming off, ive gone through 5 allready in 2 weeks.
So, as my partner has brains stappled it to cardboard, snapped off the back reflector and bolted the L plate in place. This ones lasted 60 miles so far, and doing 80mph on the A roads.
