I vaguely remember my dentist visits when I was younger, I kept up with appointments though, right up until my 18th, for two reasons.
When I was 17 I went in for my first two fillings ever, I expected some kind of procedure which involved filling the teeth with something hard, to me it sounded like an easy job.

So I was sat there mouth open, when in the corner of my eye I see what looks like a bloody syringe, and it was.
I’m fine with syringes in my arm, ass, what ever, shit, I even watch them do it because I don’t want them getting it wrong. But this needle was going in my mouth, and I wasn’t happy.
Yes it was painful and yeah needles in my face aren’t something I wanted again. So I haven’t been since.

I'm now 23, and I have something wrong with a tooth, so I made an appointment.
I found out that I need 3 fillings…. Rolling Eyes

I know there’s going to be a lot of bragging now about who’s got the worst teeth and who’s had the most work done, but please, what can you do to prepare!?

First relax, things have changed since your last appointment with fear, I recently had a route canal done, over a period of 3 weeks, and the equipment they use nowadays is pretty much pain free, you will not feel the needle going in, you will not feel the tools they use for repairs, what you will feel is your own fear of the noises that the implements make when in use, this is what you have to get over, I close my eyes and if it’s a women I like to feel her breast leaning up against my shoulder when in close proximity to me, which took my mind completely away from dental work,

In other words take your mind away from what is happening in that chair and you will be fine and pain free

Due to nearly killing myself at the dentists when I was younger and being stabbed repeatedly by a dizzy bitch of a dentist it's gimme the gas or you aint doing it.

I've had fillings before without anasthetic and it's ok, it doesn't really hurt that much.

It's true that the needles hurt much less these days as well, so give it a go - do it, before your mouth rots away!! Laughing

If they've got the nitrous oxide, that's nice for helping you calm down and relax.

When my kids went in to the dentist for fillings, they got the gas and some headphones with kids music. They just laid there all relaxed with their eyes closed and their mouths open. It helped that I was in there to hold their hands, but they actually enjoyed going to the dentist.

So... maybe bring an MP3 player to listen to while your work is being done?

I remember being about 9 years old and getting my frst filling. They gave me some gas and numbed me up with the novocaine and I had this little vision in my head of this happy little drill bit going around and around and laughing: "HeHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEhehehehe"

The laughing sounded a lot like the whirring of the dentists drill. I kept giggling each time he'd turn it on.

Think i've had 12 local anaesthetics (sp?) from my dentist now, 4 teeth out when i was 12 and 4 fillings, don't remember any of it hurting... i remember i weren't too chuffed about having the massive needle thing stuck in me when i had the teeth out although weren't too fussed when i went back for the fillings...

Not been back to the dentists for a while now, don't wanna go back now cause i'm sure it's gonna be expensive Neutral

how did you manage to find a dentist? You cant get on the books here. The only dentist you can get is the emergency one, and they will only see you is you are suffering. You cant get a check up or a scale & polish.

It is about 25 years since I last went to the dentist. Basically because it bloody hurt and no anaesthetics were given for fillings (and I hate needles anyway even if one had been available).

So, how do you go about getting a dentist to give you gas?

I always get gas, just ask for it. If you're lucky they'll have it turned up too much for a while and you'll get a really nice buzz from it, slightly trippy.

I just got in with a new NSH dentist in Gloucester and had to pay for a clean, 1 filling and sumat else and that cost £40 Thumbs Up

If you are not receiving benefits of any kind then your treatment is "Not Excluded" which means that the NHS do not pay the dentist any money for providing that treatment. This acts as income to the PCT from the dentist to assist with costs.

There's a dropping number of "Not Excluded" patients on NHS dentists books (I imagine because the costs are not that much greater with a private dentist and a higher level of care is offered) meaning dentists/PCTs are having to charge more for their services.

£40 sounds like a reasonable amount...
