This is what brings it to a crunch. All the differences in culture, attitudes, beliefs and fears can be argued about for years but the wearing of veils is a tangible problem.
It gives anyone complete anonymity and renders CCTV completely ineffective.

IMO as stated earlier the Qu'ran (Koran or however you spell/pronounce it) does not specifically make the veil compulsary. It's a bit like the catholic church when it said women can't be priests. It's not actually in the bible but it was another way of making women 2nd class (hey, much like the veil). Now we're in the 21st century (ok, that's another issue, depends what calendar you're using, but I digress) and the attitude to women has changed. Certainly in this country they're (supposed) to be treated as equals. IMO wearing the veil is showing disrespect to the traditions of this country...when in Rome and all that.

Now on the question of hoodies, the veil and CCTV do you think I'll get away wearing a shemagh in the Trafford Centre?

Whether it is compulsory or not as part of a religion, I find them threatening and offensive.
So a teenager can't wear a hoodie in a shopping centre, but he could dress head to toe in a black veil with only his eyes showing and walk around without being approached or questioned by a security guard?.

i think women like wearing the veil because it makes them feel particularly virtuous and religious

I think many women wear the veil as it stop them being beaten by family and spat on by strangers.
